I find my curl pattern gets wonky when I really lack moisture. Here's all the ways I try to keep my hair from getting dry:
-limit shampoo to when hair is greasy/dirty
-use a conditioner for curly hair. I use a no-brand shea butter one from a local co-op so I can't recommend one
-use fingers, a wide tooth comb or a wet brush to detangle hair while its full of conditioner
-don't fully rinse out conditioner. Cup your hands and fill them with water and pour that over your head a few times to rinse.
-use an old tshirt or pashmina scarf to scrunch dry hair.
-use leave in conditioner (can just mix regular conditioner with water in a spray bottle), and a curl cream and/or gel to moisturize hair and hold down frizz. Apply by smearing product on sections of hair and using your fingers to comb it through so it applies evenly. When you're done flip head upside down and shake hair to reset the curl pattern that was lost by brushing. Look up videos of the Ouidad "rake and shake" method.I use curls brand creme broke whipping cream (smells the BEST) and Garnier curl shaping spray gel.
-for extra moisture mix half a banana, half an avocado and coconut oil in a blender until it's conditioner texture. Apply to wet hair and wrap in a plastic bag and then a warm towel. Let it sit for up to an hour and then wash it out.
