I'm not sure what you consider pricey, but most extensions do cost a fair amount (at least the decent ones do). I would think it be best to spend a bit more on good quality extensions than to spend less on something you'll find doesn't last as long or has you unhappy to begin with. I really love my BELLAMI's which I'm sure you've heard of. They go up in price the longer/thicker you get them, but they are so worth it in my opinion. If you take good care of them they can last you for ages. I have a coupon code they will help a little "ausslovitt" if you decide to go with bellami I don't think you will regret it, just take care of them like anything else. 😘

I don't know what your budget is, but the cheapest human hair extensions I've found (that aren't thin or stringy) are from Tressmatch. I ordered a 120 gram set (9 wefts) at 18 inches for $78. Though if your hair is super short I'd recommend 14 or 16 inches. It'll blend a lot better, AND it should be cheaper too! The only downside to the Tressmatch extensions is these random red threads that poke out of the weft but you can cut them and you're good to go!
