I have been searching for a good foundation brush for a few weeks. I don't want to have to spend a lot of one but if that's what it comes down too, I will.

Why kind of foundations do you usually use?

I use Tarte Amazonian Clay, which is a thick liquid.

Hmm. I like the Sonia Kashuk #4 multipurpose brush. It's a very dense kabuki brush, it's my favorite! I've used it with powder foundation and liquid, but it may work for that too since it does a good job at buffing.. It's $15 and sold at target

Depends on the foundation type---liquid? cream? powder? personally, the beauty blender has been amazing to me, it applies evenly. or---your best tool as long as its clean---your fingers.

I don't have the best of luck with sponges that's why I'm looking for a brush..

Tarte makes a buffer brush designed to use with that foundation. it feels really soft. I also like the urban decay optical blurring brush, it's really good for thick foundations.

I love the sephora #53 brush!! I've used it with mousse, creams, and liquids and have found it to be amazing! It gets me a nice smooth finish, ultra pretty.

It looks like this, it's very dense but soft and flexible. You can also use it in a pinch for contouring :)

Maybe a flat paddle brush would help distribute the thick product into a smooth finish.

I'd suggest the Real Techniques Expert brush!
Or you can buy a Sonia Kashuk flat paddle brush and purchase a Sephora Beauty blender for such a flawless finish  (:!
