I was wondering if it is possible to cleanse and exfoliate your skin so much that you cause acne?

There isn't any linked solo cause to Acne. However, you can irritate the skin by over cleansing and over exfoliating; which can disrupt the skin's barrier and become more vulnerable to bacteria.

I have read that doing that can make your skin produce more oil, therefore causing acne.

It can't cause acne. but for some skin types I've heard makes your skin worse.
but not for me.
I exfoliate every night and my acne has gone away completely and I have a nice glow now (:
also, I have oily skin.

Les is right. Try to do what you need to do for your specific skin type. just follow the directions on the bottle :)
