Turn off all electronics, relax and basically clear your mind then you might be able to fall asleep faster. (:

Melatonin had a recerse effect on me, super scary!
I light incense. Aromatherapy works wonders for me. Scents like chamomile and lavender are great :)

At Bath and Body Works they have in their therapy line a lotion(along with bubble bath, pillow mist, etc) a couple scents that help you sleep.
I have the lotion and on nights I have trouble sleeping, I rub it on my neck, and I fall asleep in no time.

The natural herb Valerian is works absolutely great! Beware of the odor when u first open the bottle, but the restful deep sleep u will get will be worth the temporary smell just when opening the bottle. Camomile tea also is a sedative tea, and will multiply the affects of the valerian, or
can be used alone if u just need a slight relaxing affect.
Recent research studies have found that using Melatonin supplements to be dangerous & do more harm than good by confusing your inner time clock, thus causing you worse sleep habits. You can go online to Dr Oz's website, for a recent article about this.

I love those apps that play rain or beach sounds. There's a bunch whether you have an iPhone or a Droid. But they relax me soo much and I usually pass out soon after starting the playlist.

I just typed in sleep sounds. I have Android so it might be different if you have an iPhone, but I think they have better ones. I had a few downloaded on my iPod touch. The only one I've used on this list (there's more, obviously. I just took a quick shot to give you an idea of what to look for) is lightning bug. I liked it, the sound quality was good and it has some nice features. But there are many to choose from :)

I suffer from insomnia and my sleeping habits are TERRIBLE. Basically when I have things on my mind I just can't sleep. And it could be something worrying/stressful or something like I got an idea for how I would like to do my make up or for an outfit that I have thought up and I'll keep thinking about it and I won't be able to sleep. It's ridiculous. Anyway, if it's the same for you and you can't sleep because you have something on your mind, you need to try and clear your mind. I find sometimes that listening to relaxing music helps. I downloaded some lounge music mixes from http://www.pauloarruda.com/pod_loungebeats.html and they are nice to listen to. Also try searching for sleep hypnosis and sleep relaxation on youtube.

For me, I literally had to stop drinking caffeine by 1 o'clock in the afternoon. Also decaf tea your chamomile's your Sleepytime tea can also help. Like the other side, stay away from your TV your cell phone and any other electronics that stimulate the eyes. Reading a book helps too

I always thought that eating a banana before sleeping was a bad thing and could cause indigestion?

Amy, if sleeplessness is a regular struggle for you, I recommend looking into a supplement called L-Theanine. My doctor told me to start taking it as a natural stress/anxiety reliever and it has worked wonders for not only my sleeping habits, but I also don't get so worked up over things during the day either.
