I almost always went with black since its an evening event-even though it was springtime. I buy good investment pieces and re-wear them. Usually not to school events, but even if I did, no one said anything, they always loved my clothes and I was voted best dressed and everything in our year books. It was NOT a fashion faux pas since I chose versatile, well made and beautiful pieces.
If I was looking for something unique, I would normally check out my high-end thrift stores and purchase vintage designer cocktail dresses from there. Finding a classic piece is so easy and no one else will have it. I usually styled these dresses with modern shoes and accessories though.
Otherwise, I usually bought designer cocktail dresses from high end department stores. A lot of girls in my school bought dresses they would only wear once, and I thought most of them were hideous. I spent a little extra on my dresses and made sure I could wear them to a variety of events. I would usually go for something more classic, with an edge (like the fabric treatment). I could either style the dress in a really edgy way or in a super classic way and it created extremely different looks.
I also ONLY bought dresses that would look current, stylish, and beautiful in any era. I would want to look back at the dress or show photos of my dress when I was 50 years older and have the dress looking hip and current and fashionable in the future as well as the present. I definitely agree with your choice of doing a classy and chic look and NOT going with a trend, because it will look dated even a year after!
Every girl that won best dressed in my high school while I attended always went to prom in vintage dresses actually!

@natalie. You are very wise. I did this also in high school 22+ years ago and my nieces were able to wear those !
