I really want to dye my hair purple, really close to what's in the picture, just not all the way up the strand. I had a couple questions though! Would I need to bleach the strands that I'm going to dye? My hair is a natural red. And my other question, to everyone who has ever dyed their hair a purple color, is what colour and brand would you recommend?
Thanks in advance for all your help!

I would personally just bleach the hair since it's easier to know the color it'll come out.
Since your hair is red it can alter the color.
The purple in the pick is more magenta.
If you used that exact shade it may end up looking more of a fuchsia color.

Okay um bleaching your hair is bad. It could damage your severely :3 but I think since your hair is red it would go well with pink ish magenta.. Maybe going for a ombré look would be really cute

I recommend garnier nutrisse D01. It's a bleach kit but its not as damaging as normal bleach I've noticed. I've noticed garnier hair dyes are much less damaging and more gentle than any other brands I've tried. But beware it smells horrific! I do this outside in the shade where its warm but without direct sunlight hitting it while bleaching. It comes with 2 packs of bleach so what I actually do is only use half the developer it comes with, and one pack of bleach and half the bleach creme and save the next half for later. So youll be getting 2 bleach applications in one box dye of around $7 in Canada:)
For the dye, ik pravana has a.really good true purple like no other and its demi'permanent so it'll stay in your hair for a long time. Most people dillute it with conditioner to stretch the amount because a little amount goes a long way as it is extremely pigmented. Although it will stain everything so be careful.
Ion has a good one but its more grey toned so if your hair is not bleached to a pale pale platinum blonde, it will be barely visible. You can try mixing mostly the lavender colour with the purple to darken it a bit more. Lavender is actually darker than the swatch in sallys and than if you were to dillute it like most people do.
If you want a really temporary color you should go for manic panic or n rage. n rage lasts a bit longer than manic panic.

My friend bleached her hair and then dyed it purple and after the purple faded away it turned gray and greenish it didn't look very good so I would suggest being very careful with the bleach.

You will need to bleach if you want it to be vibrant and go the exact color of the dye you buy. The lighter your hair, the more intense and the more accurate the color. I personally find special effects lasts longest on most people I know/hear about, followed by manic panic. But you just have to find what works on your hair. It'll all depend on the porosity, dryness, thickness etc. of your hair and the dye may not last at all or it may last months.
Bleach, when done correctly, does not damage the hair too much. If done correctly, and by someone who knows what they're doing, it will have little damage, like dying hair. I don't recommend bleaching your hair by yourself, ever. I highly recommend going to a pro. I have been getting my hair bleached by a pro and dying it myself since I was 12, and I still don't have the skill to do the bleaching myself. You need to know how to respond in various ways depending on how it reacts on the hair, something you can't learn from google.
As for the purple, take into account what tone it is, it'll either be blue based purple, or a red/pink based purple. This will determine how it fades, which will either be a silvery, sometimes almost green color (blue based) or a magenta/pink color (red/pink based). It'll also fade depending on how you wash it, and what color it is underneath. But bleaching to a pale blonde (no need to tone since the purple will tone it) will get the best results.
What dye will last for you may not last on others. It all depends on the porosity of your hair, the dryness, the amount of color you use, etc.etc. So you'll just have to use different brands till you find the one that lasts longest for you.
Manic panic and special effects are generally the longest lasting on the majority of people. I like special effects best. I can usually get 6+ months without major fading or having to redye. Whereas ion lasted two washes for my hair, but lasts long on some people. Punky colors lasted about a 3-4 washes on my hair. But every hair is different, and the brand/color that works for one may last one wash in your hair, or the one that lasts one wash in someones hair may last 4 months in your hair. Its very much an expirement.
Manic panic, special effects, directions and punky color are all veggie pigment mixed with conditioner. Which means it won't damage your hair and you can literally leave it on for hours and it'll be like a hair mask. Splat, raw, and ion are chemically made, so they can be drying, you can still leave it on for hours, its not damaging it's just a bit drying. Like using a crappy shampoo and conditioner. These ones are more likely to stain, so if you plan on changing colors I'd stick to veggie dye. I don't recommend any chemically made dye though, it's most likely to stain making it impossible to get our (this doesn't mean it lasts longer, just that you'll always have a ____ color tint to your hair) and it can be hard to use for beginners since it's very thick and hard to get even if you aren't used to it. It also has zero conditioning agents in it, because it's not a true veggie dye lie manic panic, special effects etc.which is veggie pigment and conditioner, ion is chemically made pigment and preservatives to make it last in the tube longer.

Hope that helps, sorry for the novel. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to help!
I have been dying my hair funky colors for almost 10 years now, so I've had a lot of experience and know a lot about them.
