I have tried a few, but I am happy with Nature's Gate Glow Lotion from Whole Foods. It win the best of beauty award in allure in 2010, it's better for your skin as it is made without chemicals that are harmful to your skin. It has natural moisturizers, and doesn't come out orange like many others. I love it!

Jerger's gradual spray tan is awesome! If you miss a spot, you won't be regretting it all day. However, it does have an odd smell so I recommend using on a day you plan on staying at home.

Ahhh Darby I hate the jergens stuff! It smells SO bad! And I don't think the color payoff is nearly worth it.

I have that problem where everything ends up fading all streaky or looking orange! But I have had success with the Jergen's Natural Glow - but it takes a long time to color (a few days to a week) and smells weird. BUT it is a good natural color. Also, Faux Tan is the one I have had the most success with. It was 50 dollars at the time that I bought it (I couldn't believe I spent that much, believe me) but it is a wonderful product. Nice coloring, and when it fades it just goes gradually without streaks. And it made me more brown, rather than that orange tint. But I would love a cheaper option, for sure.

St Tropez mousse at Sephora, the colour is more brown than orange, it is there instantly when you apply it and it stays a long way without strikes, plus it smells good!

I'm extremely fair, so the Jergen's one tans me in only two days. So I really don't have to put up with the smell for long or worry about how soon the color will show.

This might be a dumb thing to ask, but can you use this stuff on your face? And can you put lotion/perfume on top so the self tanner doesnt stink?

I don't recommend using self tanner if you're going out! Do it at night and sleep on it. Then the smell shouldn't be such an issue. But no, you shouldn't put perfume directly on your skin, it will likely mess up the spots where it touches. You can spray around yourself, sure, but unless the smell REALLY bothers you, I wouldn't worry about it. There is a spray made for this purpose that I know of, and there's probably others.. it's by Swedish Beauty Botanica, called I Mist You, and it's supposed to neutralize tanning scents from a tanning bed or fake tan. You're supposed to wait 30 mins after applying to spray. The ingredients are formulated so that they don't affect the color, though, which is why I say if you HAVE to use something, you should get something like that.
As for using it on your face, it depends on your skin and it depends on the product, just like anything else. There are tanners made specifically for your face, but I know that I can use body tanners on my face with no problem. I'm not prone to breakouts though.
