I love the smokey eye where the lid is black and then fades into a color in the cease so I started out trying to do that. I really didn't like it and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Anyways, I started over and just did lighter grays on the lid and a dark crease.

I used Urban Decay original eye primer to start. I put the shades verve, and pistol on my lid, both from the UD naked 2 palette. in my crease I used the second darkest gray from my morphe matte color palette.

I would like any areas of improvement on this look. and also if you have any tips about how to master the black lid and fade smokey I mentioned that would be very much appreciated. thanks! :)

For the lid you can use a dark brown shadow over your primer then keep packing on a deep black shadow!

Do you have it with your eyes closed?

Personally the way that I do smokey eyes has everything to do with my dear Jackie's advice. Here's how I do mine:

I start by applying a shadow primer, and then I apply a black shadow base to my lid. For that I normally use OCC's Cosmetic Color Concentrate in Bauhaus. I apply that all over my mobile lid, then use a small synthetic brush to blend it out. Then I take a black eyeliner and go over the lash line again just to make sure it's really black.

After that, I start applying my shadows. I'll start with the lightest shade under my brow bone, usually a shade that's almost my skin tone. Then I'll work a warmer, midtoned brown into my crease with a fluffy brush and small circular motions to achieve an even blend. Then, I'll pack black onto my lid, working from my lashline upwards, then take a clean blending brush to blend the black and the brown together in circular motions. That's it, that's a smokey eye.

In the immortal words of Jackie: if you can tell where one shade ends and another begins, keep blending.

It's very beautiful! This one is more of a gradient eye since the lighter color is on the lid and it goes to a darker color. But you did a beautiful job! The color choices are beautiful and you did a great job blending! Don't get discouraged about the black smokey eye! It's a very difficult thing to get down since you have to have seamless blending. I still haven't figured it out myself lol :) Beautiful job!

Okay I'll have to give that a try. thanks! :) do you ever use a color in the crease with black on the lid? I really like that look.

Personally, I like the cohesion of using one color, but I do love using colors for smokey eyes, for example the shade "Bondage" from the UD Vice 3 as a lid color =)

When I first started out I watched a video by Jacklyn Hill on how to do a smokey eye and it was so easy! (Am I allowed to say who the youtuber was? I'm not sure). But anyway, she showed step by step and it was stunning but so very easy to create. Maybe check that out!
