I believe its just to even out the skintone :) however it's really not necessary if you feel good without it.

Rita is correct, foundation is meant for evening out skin tone! Concealers usually contain more pigment and are thicker than foundations. If your skin tone is even then you can totally just use concealer to cover up the occasional blemish.

It's not necessary but I usually opt for one or the other and rarely ever both - but I use fuller coverage foundations and find they give like the previous beauties mentioned just an overall even tone to cover minor imperfections but also much quicker and easier to work with than concealer - but if I use concealer I usually use a bb or cc cream under it to give an even tone that doesn't overpower my skin so the concealer can just cover my problem areas.

I don't wear foundation at all...every one I try looks unnatural or melts off. I don't find it necessary for me.
