So I went swimming today and tonight and tomorrow morning are basically the only time I'll have to dye my hair a lighter color (planning on going from dark brown to a very Ash blonde) so I want to at least get the first lightening step out of the way because I start school soon so I'd like to get it done before that. My question is what would happen to the colour if I used a blonde box hair dye? I am planning on it coming out quite orange, but at least a lot lighter. would this happen?

I've seen people use box dye and it went quite orange but I think they used a color a couple of shades lighter to get something in between.
I personally would rather just go to a Sally's and get color that's specifically meant for dark hair because they do lift a bit more and don't really come out orange

Thank you! that was very helpful, but I'm more so wondering if the fact that I have chlorine in my hair would make my hair come out a bit green or something strange like that, like bleached hair does when one swims with it after?

I have worked as a swimming teacher for the last 3 years and I know that a lot a lot a lot of girls dye their hair. Personally I would get it done professionally, but if you're worried about the chemicals in your hair, go to a hair place and pick up a good clarifying shampoo to strip the hair from the chemicals.
I do know that the girls that dye their hair blonde the pool turns it a greeny color after a while but they just go get it redone as usual. I don't know a lot about hair but I do hope that I could be of some help! Xx

I asked my teacher about this because I was having the same problem, I went swimming but only had a certain time to lighten it. But she said that it can be really bad, sometimes it can reverse the effects of the dye, and sometimes even make the hair burn. Just to be safe wash and dry your hair beforehand. And like Aurora said, I recommend going to Sally's and getting developer and color. They're better quality, and won't damage and mess up your hair as bad, and only for like a couple dollars more.
