You should use a heatprotector and not have your iron to hot. I never have mine over 180 degress (european degress).

Are you cleaning out your flat iron? Sometimes I forget to clean out my flat iron, and the buildup causes it to burn. This article helped me, even though I'm not much pf a natural anymore lol http://www.curlynikki.com/2014/02/the-dos-and-donts-of-flat-ironing.html?m=1.

Use a heat protectant on your hair. Garner fructis is a great brand. It smells really good and protects your hair well.
