Would the big taupe shade in the palette be good for contouring on fair skin? I heard it is.

I'm not sure, as I don't have the pallet, but if it's 1. Matte 2. A cool toned brown then sure! I say just try it and if it looks good then continue to use it! I used to use eyeshadow to contour all the time!
