Bigger wand or maybe over night non-heat methods would work better with a little bit of hairspray.

I don't use heat, either. When I want looser waves, I just top knot my hair overnight, then sort of finger fluff it out in the morning. For tighter waves, I use a texturizing spray (Fructisse has a beach one) and a curling spray gel (Fructisse, again) before I top knot it. It's always still damp in the morning, so I just use a diffuser for a couple minutes and scrunch while I do.
