Primer Questions? Do I Need It?

A foundation primer does essentially the same thing as a primer you would use before painting your walls. It helps the foundation "stick" to your skin as well as glide on smoothly, and it fills in any oversized pores or other flaws on your face so that your foundation looks flawless. I personally don't wear my foundation without it. Not only does my foundation look so much better, but it stays fresh looking all day. I suppose if you're happy with your results without primer then you may not need it. I'd definitely give it a try though!

Personally I am not a fan of primer...I feel like primer is a stand in for a skincare routine that does not solve all ur skincare concerns...if u use a primer for large pores, all the primer is doing is filling in (and potentially clogging) your pores, if your skin concern is uneven texture, primer adds product to the skin to fix the texture temporarily, again, adding another layer of product on the skin in addition to foundation...if your issue is acne scaring, again, it could make the issue worse...oily skin...same thing...

Additionally, primers are also tricky bc it may work for your skin but not all of your foundations, like attracts like, silicone primer, silicone foundation, water based primer, water based foundation, etc...so consider that as well if u would like to add this to your routine....personally I think they are a bit of a gimmick, but that also may be because I haven't found the perfect one for myself or my clients....

@michelle I'm glad u mentioned some primers don't work with all foundations. Found that out the hard way after using my bare minerals primer under another brand of makeup. UDPP seems to work well with others. Avon has a product that I use too.

Primer is mainly used for long wear! You don't necessarily have to put it on your face..but it's a much for your eyeshadow!
It makes it stick so it doesn't just melt way over time, it brighten & intensifies your shadow color..it's a must have, no matter what look your doing! :)

Primer is a definite, at least for me. It's a must if you want your makeup to stay on all day. Eyeshadow primer is wonderful and brings out the color better, and helps the shadow stay on. Urban decay primer potion gets the job done for me. Also, face primer is great. I don't leave the house without it on. It truly makes your foundation go on smoother and creates a base for everything else after that. Smash box face primer is definitely my favorite.

I honestly don't use primer. I set my makeup with setting spray and it doesn't budge. If I want extra maekup hold I spray a light hairspray (aka finishing spray) on my face and it turns out flawless.

Please don't recommend spraying hairspray on your face to other people. That is a horrible idea and not very safe. If you're going to do that to yourself, whatever, but recommending it is pretty crappy of you.

I don't use primer for my foundation, but it's a definite must-have for eyes! It helps your shadow stay on for MUCH longer, and can intensify the color of the eye shadow that you're using. I like to use primer even when I just do liquid liner on the top, because it helps it stay longer and can prevent it from flaking off if your liquid tends to do that when it dries. I personally use Too Faced Shadow insurance, and their Glitter Glue for loose glitters, or shadows with a high amount of glitter flakes. Hope this helps!

Honestly, I think a foundation primer is much more necessary if you've got oily skin. I've got dry skin (especially in the winter), and have never had a problem with my foundation sticking around as long as I need it to, because I don't have the oil on my face breaking it down. From what I've heard from others with oily skin, they can't live without a primer because the oil makes their foundation slip and slide off the skin.
