How do you apply your face makeup?

I have combo oily skin with dry areas from psoriasis mainly on my eyelids and around my nose. I have a few red marks on the lower parts of my cheeks (not too sure what it's from though, maybe old spot marks?) so I like to concentrate extra coverage there and around my nose area.

I prefer medium to full coverage. Preferably semi matte or matte and then add highlighter to the areas I want to highlight.

I apply either benefit porefessional or smashbox pore minimizing primer on my nose and anywhere else where pores are visible. I wait about five minutes or so and do my eyebrows while I wait. I'm enjoying using my rt expert face brush to apply foundation at the moment. I'm alternating between mac prolong wear and urban decay naked skin. I apply concealer under my eyes, usually maybelline fit me or catrice liquid camouflage. If I have spots I use catrice camouflage cream concealer on those. I set my concealer with rimmel stay matte powder or gosh loose powder (I forget the full name of it). Then I go in with bronzer (too faced chocolate soleil), blush (Hourglass ambient lighting blush mood exposure), highlighter (becca moonstone, laura mercier baked highlighter 01 or hourglass luminious light).

What's your routine?

I wait about five minutes from primer to foundation. Then go in straight away with concealer after foundation. I don't put foundation near my eye area though. Then I set concealer straight away and lightly set my t zone area and chin after that. I'm too impatient to wait between each step. I don't see any reason to wait well for me anyway :-)

When I'm using acne treatment my skin can get very dry so I moisturise very well on those days. If I didn't my foundation and concealer would be very cakey and cracked looking! What treatment are you using?

I could be mistaken (hopefully Jacqueline sees this, she's probably most equipped to help you) but I think the problem, at least as far as settling into your fine lines, lies with baking. I feel like this technique only works if you already have flawless skin. Any time I've tried, no matter the powder or foundation I use, baking always makes my fine lines more noticeable.

What works for me (combo/oily skin) is this:
I start with primer (NYX photo lovin, rimmel stay matte, or elf mineral) and concentrate it in the areas where my fine lines are and blend outward.
I leave it for a few minutes and then go in with foundation (lately l'oreal pro matte) on a sponge, using less foundation where my fine lines are. I find that the more coverage in those areas, the more pronounced my lines get throughout the day.
I apply my concealer (it cosmetics bye bye undereye) with my finger under my eyes, using as little as possible, for the same reason I mentioned about foundation. Then on my acne and few scars I pinpoint conceal using an eyeliner brush and lightly pat with my finger to blend. I find that any more concealer than that on top of a full coverage foundation can get cakey or end up enhancing what you're trying to conceal.
After foundation and concealer, I use the TINIEST amount of powder (nyx hd finishing powder or nyc smooth skin) and press it into the skin using a kabuki brush.

But with all that said, this is just what works for me personally, and after a LOT of trial and error.

Try to keep your skin as moisturised as possible if the treatment is making you dry. Using masks should help. I don't know what else could be causing your problem. Try what Kailey suggested and see if it makes a difference :-)

Here's my routine:
- wash & moisturize fae; let moisturizer absorb for about 5mins.
- prime skin using Too Faced Primed & Poreless; let sit for 3-5mins depending how rushed I am.
- do any colour correcting that I feel I need. I use a simple little pallet from Quo.
- apply UD Naked Skin foundation with beauty blender. I usually apply 2 coats to get a fuller coverage.
- conceal, using NARS Radiant Creamy concealer & Tarta Maracuja concealer for blemishes that need more coverage.
- set everything in place with NARS translucent setting powder in the loose form. for this I use a fan brush so that I don't apply too much of the powder, which can give a cakey look.
- set everything with the UD All Nighter setting spray, tho I'm planning to switch over to the KVD spray. I hear it's much better :p

Here is a before n after photo to show how it looks before n after I do my makeup - lately I've been going light on the makeup so for this look - I'm not using any primer - I start with the tarte Amazonian clay foundation all over my face (including over my eyes and down my neck) I let that sit for about a minute (I'm very impatient and like to multi task) so after that I start filling in my brows with the NYX brow pencil in charcoal then set that with a clear brow gel by ULTA, then I do my mascara (Clinique high impact) then I do my eyeliner (UD 24/7 pencil) and tight line the water lines then I also outline the outer half on my top n bottom lids then blend that out with a small blending brush - then I apply my bronzer/blush duo by sephora in the E & 3 method to warm up my face (as you can see in the before photo I'm quite pale without it and I personal like a tan look especially when it's sunny out) then I apply my lipstick (NYX matte lipstick in natural is here) then I set everything with the tarte setting powder and if it's hot out I'll also spray everything down with the model in a bottle setting spray - but lately I skip that step - either way that has been working well for me - I find the more products I use or layer the more the fine lines under my eyes show so I've been trying to adopt the less is more motto - I have sensitive oily/combo acne prone skin with acne scars on my cheeks - I try to use a full coverage foundation all over my face (but no more than a pea sized amount) by itself or I'll use a bb/cc cream with a full coverage concealer but never foundation and concealer - I find it to be too much - although it completely covers my scars usually by the end of the day it looks cakey and I hate when that happens - so I'm learning to use less and it's been working just fine - it may not completely cover my scars but it's good enough to wear you can barely see them - I also have psoriasis that flares up usually in the winter and I usually need concealer to hide it and a color corrector for the redness

I like the nyc smooth skin a lot! It's the first translucent powder I've ever used that is actually translucent! I think the nyx hd gives a slightly smoother finish, but I do really like the nyc one.

I used to have this problem, and I figured out my skin was dehydrated. After I figured out my skin care, my foundations always look amazing! I use Thayer's witch hazel to tone which is also very moisturizing. I'm combo skin with dry parts around nose. I use 100% pure luminous primer OR tarte bb primer which has been my favorite lately. It covers redness like no other and is super silky!! Most days I just use this and no foundation. But on the days I want to go full on, I don't really wait before I apply my foundation, but I apply my foundation with beauty blender for an undetectable finish. My favorites are born this way, tarte miracle, and MUFE ultra hd. They are all really lightweight but covers WONDERFULLY. I set it with RCMA no color powder with my damp beauty blender underneath my eyes for my concealer (naked skin UD) but I just use a big fluffly brush elsewhere for a light setting. After this I actually do my eye makeup as I want my face to set for a long minute lol. Once I'm done with my eye makeup I go back to my face to apply bronzer blush and highlight. I find that if I wait, it won't look patchy and it blends so much better.

I have combo skin, currently a little on the dry side. I have a small fan that I keep on my vanity when doing makeup, I feel it speeds up the wait time.

I put on embroylisse lait cream or ole henrickson truth spf lotion. wait 5 minutes.

Then use hourglass veil rpimer, wait 3 minutes. Then I use porefessional or Dr Brandt no more pores primer on my cheeks where the pores are more pronounced. wait 3 minutes.

I haven't been using foundation much lately since my skin is on the clearer side but I will usually use a blush and bronzer to add some color to my face.

then I use a setting powder to help with shine then use Mac fix + to make everything look seamless. it's its a hot day I will go back with the setting powder and do my nose lightly.

I like to take my time doing my makeup so this how I do it. And I have oily skin.
First I'll wash up and put my toner I forgot the name sorry.
Then I'll put cerave moisturiser and then go get dressed so I can let it soak in.
I'll then put on my primer, which I have been using the Elf mineral primer and I love it. Makes my skin so soft.
Then Ill do my eyebrows and eye makeup, because that usually decides what lippy I'll wear. Then I use my beautyblender to apply my foundation, which is a mixture of maybelline fit me matte and loreal pro matte because I got a one too dark and the other is too light xD
Then I'll wait for a minute or so and use rimmel stay matte powder with a kabuki brush and I just lightly brush that across my face.
I'll then take a break and do my hair then go back and add bronzer, which is one from I forget the company. Its soemthing minerals. Not bare minerals though.
And I'll add physician's formula peachy blush and an elf baked peachy blush.
If I feel like it I might go use so susan highlighter on my cheekbones under my eyes.

Shannie, I feel like your always having a battle with foundation issue's. Just wondering if you want complete full coverage have you invested in a hard core complete Full coverage foundation like dermablend, Estee lauder Maximum Camouflage coverage foundation, cover fx? Have you also tried a true matte primer? I wanted to also say The Baking the face thing does nothing but make everything look like Cake, it truly doesn't do anything because in actuality your face is heating up product's no matter what through out the day so added additional makeup on top to do a so called bake isn't making anything happen it's just making the skin work extra hard and sweat which turns into a waxy sunken look, lines and areas look more intense, Something to think about.Have you also used a no shine moisturizer? You want all product's to relate in the finish.;)

Shannie don't worry, here is another thing to think about when your watching a yt video or looking at instagram picture's (It's just a moment in that time) your not looking at the effect of all the makeup on after a hour or a day and filter or editing out the mistakes lol ;) I think so many think they're doing something wrong because they obsessed with that moment captured. Just think the reality of your own look your aiming for which in some cases could be overloading product or not researching the right product's for your skin type. :)

The fixed and controlled lights youtubers have hides every flaws or cakiness they may have. Also the heavy amounts of makeup they use is mostly for photography to show on Instagram and social networks and what not. If they don't put more makeup it won't show on the pictures due to the bright lighting they have. I'm sure these ladies don't wear glam makeup everyday? Do they? I watch teni Panosian channel and she only puts makeup once or twice a week (probably for tutorials and/or events) because she rather have bare face on lol! I also think that you can skip foundation underneath your eyes since you'll be putting concealer on anyway. Something else may help, is to put a darker foundation for your "bronzer" areas so you can skip that too and just set it with a light loose powder such as RCMA. I don't get the baking effect unless you're on stage on Broadway. I just set it without "baking". Sometimes when I see pictures on Instagram I always think what does this look like in real life? Lol.
