It all depends on what makeup looks you like to do. I mainly focus on my eyes with my makeup, so I've got lots of shader and crease brushes. If you like to do lots of contouring and highlighting, you'll need more face brushes of course. I apply most of my lip products straight from the tube, but I've got a couple of lip brushes for products like OCC Lip Tars. It's also important to remember that some brushes can be multitaskers. A fluffy crease brush is great for blending out concealer, and any flat shader brush can be used for eyeshadow, concealer, or lip products. And don't worry about getting everything at once. Just build up your collection as you can.

What kind of make do you put on? it depends on you really. if you wear power, get a powder brush. if you wear blusher, you get a blusher brush. you wear foundation, you get a foundation brush. if you wear eyeshadows you get an eyeshadow brush. if you like using gel eyeliners then get an eyeliner/angled brush. get brushes for the make up you use cos there's no point getting a foundation brush if you don't wear foundation. best place to look is elf (eyes, lips, face)

You don't NEED any set number of brushes, sometimes I can use the same brush for my entire look. BUT if you want to start a collection, Coastal Scents' 22 piece brush set it AMAZING! Here's their link http://www.coastalscents.com/brushes/sets-and-cases/br-set-011.html.

I myself love Real Techniques brushes because they're very versatile. They have a good amount in the collection but they don't have an outrageous number because almost all of the brushes can be used for at least one or two different things. They're good quality but don't cost a fortune too.

When it comes to brushes, I'm definitely the right person to ask. I too myself have been on the hunt for great brushes && I narrowed it down to the the basics that I need & will use only. This means tons of reviews & searching. && here it is.
I use the 109 to Contour, 168 for blush, 188 for highlighting my face. && 239 to pack on e/s, 217 to apply crease color, 224 to blend out harsh lines && lastly 219 to add drama to my crease or apply color to bottom lashes =]

I agree that what you do determines what you need. Are you doing make up on yourself or others? If you're doing make up on other people they'll think it strange if you use the one same brush for everything. I'm sorry, but its true. Although, that doesn't mean multitaskers aren't fabulous. Just make sure you have brushes for wet products and brushes for dry products. And stay away from fancy things like stippling brushes and fan brushes until you're comfortable with what you have in the basics and start to feel a void in your collection.
