The truth is that salon quality (and I don't mean Sally's) are far superior and you have a much better range of options depending on what you're looking for. Drugstore hair dyes are chemically engineered to be rather vile. They're meant to be fade resistant, cover grays and work on all hair types. Know this, because once you decide to color your hair very dark with box dye it will be a long and hard process to change levels and possibly even tone. You're committing.
That being said, I'd recommend Clairol...Perfect 10 if there's a color you want, because while Nice and Easy works great, it does smell patently awful.

If you want a violet/purple go with Chromasilk by Pravana. Lasts a long time.

Note that both Pravana and Paul Mitchell are salon colors.
Sally's is just as bad as drugstore boxes.

It lasts if you take care of it - that's true of all hair color. Perfect 10 has no ammonia and will be the gentler, kinder option for your hair.
