I started with elf and have worked My way up. What I did is I watched a ton of YouTube videos and then practiced just putting on makeup when no one was around, I took my time, and after a while I became pretty good. I am still learning but I think I do pretty good for being self taught =)

Go and get a consultation at a makeup counter. They will show you how to use the brushes, how to apply makeup and give you makeup tips. You don't have to buy their products, but its a good way to learn.

The key is to look like your not wearing it so go for a foundation that completely matches your colour and don't apply it too thick, I recommend using a translucent powder too and then your eyes are up to you :)

Less is more, practice a bit, get your mum or a friend to help you, and buy some cheaper stuff at first. You might find you don't even like wearing, so don't spend heaps at first.

I agree with less is more. As you get better you can go bolder. You don't want look back at pictures a year from now and cringe at the black winged eyeliner across your lid and not the lash line. Lol.
