I have never worked at either but I know that MAC associates work off commission and Sephora associates don't. That makes a huge difference to me cause I feel like MAC associates hound you for a sale whereas Sephora associates ACTUALLY help you.

Mac associates makeup are TOO overdone. They actually scare me and I'll never ask for there help in picking out makeup.

Sephora would be good because then you get to learn about multiple brands, not just one.

I currently work at sephora and used to work at the make up counter. I have to tell you, sephora is so much better in my opinion. The staff works as a team because we aren't on commission, you gain a more well rounded knowledge because you aren't rand specific and you get a much more varied customer. don't get me wrong, I learned a lot of things at the counter as well such as an acute knowledge of the brand itself and signature techniques. It's a personality thing really. Hope this helps.

I work for sephora as well and I completely agree with Anna, Mac does not woek on comission to correcr that, but Mac has a very unique art with makeup that isnt easily catered to all, I love the environment of sephora. :)

The Mac I worked at was commission. At Dillard's everything is on commission. Can't speak for any other department stores tho.

If you desperately want MAC product, head to Victoria's Secret- little known that MAC does their make-up line, for far cheaper. Most VS associates don't even know... It's a pretty well guarded secret. Sure, you'll get hit up to open a card, and you're on your own, but the blush and shadow pallettes are great.

A friend of mine works at sephora and he has nothing but good things to say about the company. I'm so envious of all the training he gets. I love product knowledge, and from what I understand you get lots of that. I would also just choose sephora over Mac because there are so many new and exciting things coming into that store all the time, not JUST makeup.

That's strange about Dillard's because MAC is normally a leased company, therefore not having to abide by department store rules. For example, I work at MAC in Belk- all other cosmetic associates work off commission but we don't.

Dillard's doesn't really have commission it's a sales per hour goal. If you don't hit it you take a pay cut on your hourly wage, if you go above it you get a raise. It's not really commission but it still sort of applies pressure. That may be how they get around it.

So it's still not commission based. Commission would mean a direct amount of pay, usually a percentage, for each sale.

Oh my gosh you're right!! Wow. I'm a moron clearly. You should go work at Mac. Oh my gosh. What was this conversation about again guys?
You get commission if you reach an amount over a specific number after every month, you also get commission off certain things in the store that you sell that aren't Mac.
This was also a few years ago things may have changed.
It isn't technically commission but it makes you hound people for sales.
So clearly don't base any of your decision on whether or not something is commission because Mac isn't. My mistake. No big deal.
