How to apply glitter to nails?

I have a few tubs and packets of nail glitter but when I tried to put it on my nails it clumped together and didn't stay on, how can I apply it evenly?

I use glitter pigments that I got from Claire's,applied a top coat dipped my nails in there shook off the excess and made sure it was even then applied a top coat again to seal in the glitter and they were gorgeous I wish I had pics.
