Does going on birth control stop acne? or at least reduce it?? I have mild breakouts and I've tried everything- drugstore to high end and my skin is so bipolar! my dermatologist suggested it is hormone related so she said to go on the pill. will it help??

Yes but you don't want to go on it if you don't need it for BIRTH CONTROL cuz you could gain weight or other... "Disadvantages". But everyones different, maybe you should try it.

I didn't gain weight. I don't get acne anymore either.

So here's the deal: going on certain hormonal birth control can be very effective at clearing acne. I had moderate-severe acne before going on the pill and it cleared it completely BUT... There are many side effects that you may get that can outweigh the benefit of clear skin. I felt that way and went off my hormone method for a copper IUD. My acne came back and it was horrendous. Much worse than it was before. I read up and found that this is common for women who choose to quit their regular flow of artificial hormones. I'm back on the pill because I couldn't stand how horrible my skin got, and five months in its STILL bad. So make sure you weigh your options carefully and only go on hormonal treatments if you're absolutely sure it's your last resort.

I'm not on the pill but I have the mirena. I never had acne a day in my life until I got the mirena. All in all, mirena just sucks.

I was prescribed it specifically for acne when I was around 15, and now I'm 18 and let me tell you I haven't had a breakout in forever. Talk to your dermatologist.

Yes it does actually. I've been on the pill for a few months now and it clears up my skin like magic. But I only suggest you go on birth control if you really need it.

It has worked for lots of people, but I suggest that you try some other things first - There are other medications and topical creams that will probably give you faster results.

The pill really helped me a lot. At the same time I started using Differin. Its been 12 weeks and I'm clearer then I've been in years.

There are different types of oral contraceptive pill. They differ in dosage, active ingredient, ingredient ratio, day plan structure and so on. They will act in different ways on different women.
I take a low dose OCP which settled down, but didn't completely stop, my acne.
I get far fewer breakouts than I used to before I took it, and the spots (on my face, at least) seem smaller and easier to manage.
You should really speak to your doctor if the sole reason you want to take the pill is for your acne. If you're also using it as birth control, then sure. But discuss which one is right for you.
There are other prescription medicines your doctor can put you on which are solely for the purpose of acne treatment, but they are very strong and their varying side effects can be irreversible (my step brother's acne cleared up and his skin looks amazing now, but he developed mental illness and now has bipolar disorder which has apparently been touted as a common side effect).
Talk to your doctor about what's best for you.

It can help, yes! If your acne is hormonal, the pill can help reduce breakouts. Keep in mind that it does take time. Some people see results sooner than others, but generally it takes at least a couple months for results to show.
I've been on two types of birth control (don't remember the names!). One made me a little moody, but presented no other problems. The other, however, caused me to gain close to 30 lbs in two months. Everyone is different, so you may or may not experience side effects. If you're really set on trying the pill for acne, then go for it. If the negatives outweigh the positives, you can just stop taking it! It's worth a shot.

Idk I feel like you shld try other things first before going on the pill...it does help with acne but there are MANY other side effects to the pill that are much worse than having acne...go to the dermatologist and see what sort of gels and creams or even antibiotics they can give you before you go on the pill.
