I don't know what to do to prevent them or repair my hair. I've been growing my hair out for years and don't want to have to cut off more than a regular trim.

Don't use heat and lots of products. The chemicals and the heat can slow or stunt growth. Trimming split ends is good.

No heat!! Also, trim your hair once a month, I know personally how scary it is to trim your hair often if you're trying to grow it out, even I can get hesitant but what it will do is if you trim about an inch off the ends each month it will grow a bit faster and when you cut the inch off the next month it will be around the length it used to be and eventually, if you have major heat damage like I did, it will ease it a bit... Also, try a conditioning treatment to prevent, Aussie's 3 minute miracle is my best friend when it comes to my hair (:

I hv super straight hair, I blow dry only to dry them...I curl, I styled with heat...but to prevent splits I sometimes wash my hair with cold water and I trimmed regularly every 3 months.
