I get blonde highlights, but there is a huge contrast between my hair color and the highlights. I want to break my base and make it lighter. What do I tell my stylist? What product is best to use?

Bring in a picture of the color you're aiming for with the highlights you're aiming for. A picture is worth a 1000 words.

Maybe you went to light with the highlights. You should put some lo lights in it as well. I wouldnt recommend lightening your base. Thats a 2 step process right there. Then when you go back for a highlight you'll also have to get a touch up as well. Try adding a deeper blond or a light warm brown along with the highlights. Im a colorist. Just sayin..

Jess thanks I know what you mean, and I was thinking that too, but I like the blonde color I have and I want it to be lighter... I am nervous though, I guess it is more of an upkeep right? I hate when I pull my hair up too it is really dark at the top

Yeah it is an upkeep. More so with 2 processes. You should try a deeper blond maybe with the highlights rather then a brown. I really wouldnt lift your base.

Ugh Jess, I should have listened to you, but I went with what I thought was going to lighten my base a little and it is orange at the base now. I should have just listened to you... I just couldn't stand the sight of the dark brown hair I had with the high lights! Now what do I do? She told me she could put a toner in it, but to wait a week to see if it fades :( I'm sorry, I really do appreciate your help!
