so I wanna do the ombre on my hair by myself ( I know this is probably not the best idea) . but my hair is realllllllly dark. so I went out and bought a blonde professional dye by salerm and I didnt get developer because I already had developer home. BUT it was 20 vol not 40 so it didn't do anything to my hair.. should I just keep the 20 vol developer and go out and buy a bleach kit or should I keep the hair dye and buy 40 vol developer?

a 40? no offense but are you nuts? do you want to break off your ends? A 20 will work but if it works slower, especially if you have to fight through history of box color that still live on the ends. It works slower but at least you will have more control of what level it ends up. Chances are if you are dark, you will need a toner to cancel unwanted tones. Of course, my advice will be to crack the wallet open and see a hair dresser. Here is what I see in my salon: people want to save money so bad they ruin their hair trying so I have to fix it and charge a color correction price of STARTING at $150...all just to save money. The price jumps up depending on the amount of product and labor it takes to correct. Color corrections take alot of my time..time I could be using on other clients so yes its expensive. Sigh, I guess ive just seen too much. Good luck girl.

Cherish nailed it. This is going to end one of 3 ways: 1) you're going to end up with very goofy looking hair and feel very depressed about having to walk around with it because you can't afford the salon repair, 2) you're going to fry your hair and end up with it breaking off and/or having to cut a lot of it off, or 3) you're going to end up at the salon paying an arm and a leg to fix it. Not to be Debbie Downer, but be mindful. It is just hair, and it will grow back, but living with it in the meantime can be very hard.

GO TO A SALON!!! i recommend one that has a good colorist. I don't think you have enough knowledge and skill to handle 40vol and ombre hair takes a lot of skill to achieve...I've seen too many cases of horribly done ombre hair. trust me going to a SALON will save you money in the end

Trust me ladies, I know, my mom has been telling me the same thing. But all really good hair salons are toooo far from my house. and i have prom next month so i just want it done honestly, the right way... So im taking your advice and going to a salon but, where :((((
