I agree find a shade that matches your skin tone. MAC ruby woo and sephoria lip stain 01 are two matte reds that look great on all shades!

I recently started wearing vintage inspired reds. My favorite is retrofuturist red by LimeCrime. It's opaque, lasts for hours, and is the perfect vintage red! Reds with blue in them tend to make the teeth look whiter*

You can try the jewelry test-- if you prefer how silver looks against your skin, you'll probably want to go for a blue-based red; if you like the way gold looks, try something with orange undertones. Of course this isn't set in stone, but it can help you narrow down your choices. I think trial and error is the best way to find your best red shade. And if you don't feel comfortable wearing a fully opaque red lip to start out, try a gloss or stain first to ease yourself into the idea of a bolder lip color.
