I am building my kit and im pretty set on getting the MUFE HD Foundation. However, its pretty pricey and im overwhelmed on how many shades I truly need to buy to successfully mix? How many foundations do u carry whether it be a different brand or not? And which shades? Any other makeup products that could help? Thanks!

I believe I have like 13-15.. more variety is better IMO

You'd probably need most (if not all) of them, because each client you work on will have different skin tones. Perhaps you could buy a few MUFE ones and a few of a slightly cheaper brand and then you could mix them up anyway? You'll build your collection over time so this would be your best bet and then when you make some money continue buying the other shades :)

Revlon is apparently a good brand, and isn't that expensive. I'm thinking of trying it out when I have some spare cash

its not an issue of money more so than to only buy what i need. i don't want to carry a whole line if i dont use it. I would like to know specifically what shades are best for mixing...do i buy every otger shade in a line? every third? or just 4 and then mix?

I tend to carry 6 foundations at most. the lightest shade the darkest shade and 2 in between. I mix a lot and just no not everyones faces 1 color the other 2 bottles would be a light and I dark foundation with a pink or red undertone. the other 4 bottle is more of a warm olive neutral undertone

I don't carry bottled foundation, they are more expensive and a waste of space! I recommend getting foundation palettes, it's usually cheaper for the amount of shades you are getting! I carry Cinema Secrets, but there is also Graftobian, RCMA. Get on CameraReadyCosmetics.com also unless you are only using it for shoots, you should not have drugstore foundations. It just doesn't look great if you are charging someone money for something they could get themselves. But those brands are not HD so they won't look nearly as good in photos and film! Building your kit does take time, start small and go with quality or quantity! :)

I agree with alyssa you should get the foundation palettes.. they come with many colors of shades ifnot all on one palette... and you can build without clutter.

With alyssa, crc has HD foundations for the same price as Revlon etc. The rule of thumb is to pick two light two in the middle and two dark (warm and cool tones) ideally a black and white base to lighten or darken those foundations which Yaby carries. Get a foundation you can thin out from cream to liquid, I believe Ben Nye and Graftobian foundations do that. Hope that helps :)

I only carry 6. I tend to mix a few together if I need a different shade.

Did you know makeup forever has a pro discount? 40%...makes those foundations much more reasonably priced. I carry about 10 shades of 3 different foundations in my kit. I decant them into smaller bottles so they're not taking up too much space. I mix for in between shades.

I think you need at least 10 shades than you can play and mix some to get other colors.

I think about 12 would work. What I love about OCC foundations and tinted moisturizers is that it's either yellow based or red based so you have Y0 or R0 and it go up to Y5 or R0. From there you can mix the foundations to get the right shade for your client.

With MUFE, depending on which foundation line, there are about 16 foundations. I would say pick foundations with a yellow or red base and from there pick the amount you need. You can always mix foundation colors to work for your client.

In this student starter kit it looks like they recommend you to start with 6 shades.

I carry a foundation palette as well as a concealer palette. I want to say each is twelve shades, that's also what I use personally. I don't know anyone who is an exact match for foundation from a bottle, and the difference definitely shows in photo work.

Reni, where did you get your palettes from?

Http://inmykit.com/foundation.htm. This is listing of several foundations to try including mufe and what colors to stock by Kevin James Bennett. It also goes over anything else you might want to have. Hope this helps!
