How do you budget your spendings for your makeup addiction?

I caught myself buying similar products with different brands. Periodically I inventory my makeup to see if I could add any colors or if I really need anything. Once I'm pretty stocked on my good basics, foundation, primer, mascara gloss..then I'm done spending. If you dont stop yourself now it will be an endless cycle because in our minds we can always justify something we want when we really have all that we need.

Give yourself a monthly limit on makeup necessities and put aside a little money for the big makeup purchases and do not go past that limit. I also sell things on ebay so whatever money I make half goes to saving the other half goes to clothes n makeup.

My rule is that I can't exceed my train case. :-) I also try not to buy a lot of the same thing so I don't have duplicates.

I give myself an "allowance" but I never stick with it. And my husband is a serious enabler because he'll come home with goodies for me as well. I'm self-employed so my checks are all mine but after I contribute to the family account in my head I TRY to stick to a budget of $150 a month for make-up. Doesn't happen. I bought up the rest of the MAC Archie collection just yesterday and that was well over $200. And I shopped last week and just lived in Sephora and MAC during the month of January. I need an intervention for real.

I don't necessarily have a monthly budget but I track my spending on mint.com and I try not to allow myself to exceed $500 per quarter. That equates to $2k a year and that is more than enough for a self indulgent hobby in my opinion.

I don't just buy randomly, I make lists of everything I need to have and then go buy what I don't have. And I budget a certain amount to spend out of my pay each week, and I save the rest. Although, sometimes it doesn't work out like that. ;)

I try not to buy things I don't really need (key word is TRY), and I take inventory every few weeks so that I don't buy anything too similar to what I've got. Nowadays I just make sure I've got my basics and let myself get a "fun" item every week or so but I try not to go over $20 with that. I have 2 jobs so with my "main" job I pay my bills and put into my savings, and my other check is my pocket money. It's $40-$100 depending on how much I work, so I determine how much I'll buy from that. Obviously I won't get all makeup if I have $40 of spending money for the month, so sometimes I won't get anything new at all unless its something that I've got to have because I wear it daily. I do slip up sometimes but for the most part I really do my best to stick to my game plan!

@michelle what is mint.com?

Luella-- mint is a great website and app that helps you keep track of your earnings, spending, debt, and anything else to do with your finances. It's really awesome for showing you just how much you're spending, and where.

Do they have an app version?

Courtney B.

Yes, there's an app for it as well as a full site.

I have $50 a month for my "basics", and any extra money I get goes to makeup.

I have this system where I budget EVERYTHING. First, I always look at the super important stuff and necessities, like bills and groceries. I calculate all that and see what I have leftover. From that amount, I put $20 - $25 into savings. Then I look at things I want. I will alternate with my spending and limit myself greatly. One month I'll buy an outfit or makeup and only carry about $25 - $50 cash with me and NO CARDS! Having a card makes you tempted to buy things.

You also have to go through your mind and reason why you don't need this palette or that new brush and just walk away. Overall, it's just disciplining  yourself.

Its neat how everyone seems to really organize their methods. I am similar to this, but I find myself wanting to purchase unnecessary items often to simply try them out. If that's the case, I usually go for drugstore brands to minimize the costs.

I just placed myself on a six month "no buy" starting today. I highly doubt I'll be successful but its worth a try. I need an accountability partner.lol.

I don't do budgets because I'm not good at it plus my husband gives me money everyday to buy whatever I need. also when I ask him for something he HAS to give it to me. He spoils me a lot :)

The spa I work at carries the main cosmetic line I use, Jane Iredale, so of course I get a discount (which I wouldn't know what to do without!). Otherwise... I swear every time I step into a drugstore I come out with some beauty related product I didn't intend on getting when I walked in.. lol.

I put half of my money in savings. Throughout the month I'll try out different products and read reviews, and see if I don't already own that product or if there's a less expensive dupe for it. If at the end of the month I still have some money left, I'll go and spoil myself with the goodies I've been lusting over :)
