You could try having something else handy to pick. keep play dough nearby and pick it instead every time you realize you're doing it, hopefully four habit will transfer to the play dough rather than your finger. Your hands may smell like playdough but they wo.t be peeling or bleeding.

it makes time to transfer a habit, so whatever else you decide to pick (doesn't have to be play dough) be patient and correct yourself each time you realise. Or you can download a meditation bell app, I have mindfulness bell. you can set it to ring every fifteen, thirty, or sixty minutes. Start with fifteen, every time it rings either become aware that you are not picking it, or stop if you are, its a reminder. as you go on you can set the timings further apart as you become less dependant on the picking. eventually you won't need them and you won't pick. breaking any habit takes time, patience, and you have to keep at it. good luck:).

I do the same. The only thing that stops me is if my nails are nicely polished because the picking looks so unsightly if I'm rocking a pretty nail color. I usually try and keep a stress ball in my hand. Its kinda like play dough except you can't eat it.lol. I keep one in the car, in my purse and one for the house.
