how do i choose the correct blush shade?

My mother taught me this weird trick: pinch your cheeks until its red, that shade of pink or red will most likely suit you. Also, any shade of lipstick that you find compliments you, it would also look great on your cheeks! ^_^ hope that wasnt confusing!
