How did you work out your skincare routine?

At one point I was breaking every skincare law in the book, and it was starting to show. So, in an effort to fix it, I narrowed down everything to absolute basics and tried to develop some discipline when it comes to taking care of my skin.

The effort is paying off and I feel like I can add things in and refine what I'm doing now that the major problems are under control.

So I want to know - how do you go about choosing products? Why do you use what you have and how do you decide how frequently you need to do it? Skincare is a pretty individual thing and I'd like to know what other people's rationale is.

Trial and error. Just trying loads of different products until you find the rights ones. I've tried so many products, waisted a lot of money too but I found soon as I started buying products for my skin type (many people just ignore this) but soon as I started buying products that were for combination skin I soon found many problems went away.

I'm still trying to figure mine out. My skin is pretty temperamental so for me it's a case of reading people's reviews and trying the products out.
Also, I always peek at your posts, you are an intelligent, insightful person and I find your comments helpful and fascinating x

I think society and lifestyle factor partly as well. My mam never really wears makeup or has a particular skin care routine and as a teen it wasn't something I was concerned about. I pretty much neglected my skin in my late teens/early twenties to raving and parties!! It's only now I'm conscious of my skin and want to prevent further damage and try and get it at its best. My daughter finds my makeup/skin care fascinating so maybe she'll appreciate and care for her skin and hair better than I did!!

Same boat. I just didn't care until basically woke up one day and realized that hey, my acne is down to a minimum...now I just look old. I did the ol' reverse, panic, double-take freakout I'm pretty sure every woman has when she realizes she's not 16 anymore lmao.

Now I've gotten the acne to go away almost entirely and improved the overall texture of my skin. I feel like I need to work hard and carefully to get to a good place and stay there so I can continue to age gracefully, if you know what I mean.

Trial and error. I've always had pretty good skin, even in my teen years, but there's always room for improvement. When I was a teenager I'd use products targeted to teens thinking that's what I needed to use when in reality I was just messing with my skin by using products that didn't work with my skin type. Now I don't over cleanse and try not to introduce too many new things into my routine at once so that if something does cause a problem, I'll know the culprit. I'm 23 now and people always ask me what face makeup I use and most of the time I don't have any on. I just take care of my skin. I have a routine and I'm super diligent with it, and I'm proud of my skin.
I realize that it's not always as simple as washing your face to fix problems-- some people do need to see a dermatologist and acne can be genetic. But I know so many people who don't have the skin they want and don't have a routine that they stick to, and I think that is a major factor for many people's skin problems.
