Some are good.
Some are bad.
They shouldn't hurt unless you put on way too much glue and it gets into your eyeball. They may feel heavy and uncomfortable, but that would be because of a thicker/heavier band (well if you get obviously big lashes then yeah that would be a factor too) and you may want to try something else. Best beginner lashes would be the Ardell brand. They should not damage your eyelashes at all as long as you are very careful with the glue. Do not just rip off your eyelashes. Loosen up the glue with some olive oil/makeup remover first and then peel them off.
Already covered the brand part - Ardell. BUT! For brand new beginners, I'd suggest the dramatic ELF ones because they're only a dollar so who gives a damn if you damage them/waste them. Good glue would be DUO or Ardell. I have the Ardell one, I like it.
Some look fake while some won't look fake at all. It depends on whether you get the more "natural" looking ones. Obviously, if you grab a pair of blue ones or a pair of really long and thick black ones, they won't look like your real lashes, hahaha.
Oh yeah, I reviewed this pair a while back:

And I wore the ELF dramatic lashes in this video:

ELF Dramatic do not look dramatic at all. They lied, hahaha.
