Tips for growing out nails?

My nails are really short and brittle from biting them for years. They look gross and I'd like to be able to paint my nails without being embarrassed! Does anyone have any tips for growing out stronger nails? When I grown mine out they bend and then break very easily!

I have the same problem. I got them painted then didn't touch them and put on a strengthening coat!
