Honestly I think ammonia free colors like clairol perfect 10 and revlon colorsilk work best. The clairol is less drying, IMO. I've also gotten very good results with Loreal Sublime Mousse. Garnier Olia is SO good at depositing pigment that I would seriously proceed with caution. I might try using it for highlights pretty soon...hmmm, let's see...what else? Loreal Preference and Clairol Nice and Easy both work well and get even results, but they smell horrendous and they can be sort of hard to work with. Haven't used Feria in a long time...just was never that impressed with it. Garnier Nutrisse and Herbashine is fine, but it always comes out way, way darker than you anticipate, even when you buy a box 2-3 shades lighter than you want.
Honestly for what you want I'd recommend using Revlon Colorsilk of the new buttercreme variety in the color you want. I was impressed with it.
