Best Way to dye purple

okay so I want to dye the bottom portion of my hair purple. last time I did I didn't bleach it and it came out n like 3 weeks I have dyed my hair before and that has lasted 4 months+ should I bleach it? I have heard that the bleach makes the hair blue
