You can do a sockbun without a hair doughnut by using a sock with the toe area cut off. I find it's easier to do with a foam donut hair tool (available at drugstores or hair accessories stores for about $5). The sock bun donuts also give a more uniform shape and size to your bun all the way around.

The messy sock bun hairstyle is good for a classy romantic look with a dress or a casual day with jeans and a sweater.
