Since Comic Relief began, they have helped 12.2 million people in need across the UK and since the last Red Nose Day alone, they have helped over 1.1 million.
One of the issues they fund is maternal mental health in the UK and it's something I feel really passionate about.
More than 1 in 10 women develop a mental illness during pregnancy or within the first year after having a baby. It's still seen as a big taboo and not talked about openly. Many women feel completely alone and that they are a bad mum. This means that they're too embarrassed to share their true feelings which exacerbates their sense of isolation. Tragically, this type of mental illness often goes unrecognised, undiagnosed and untreated.
There are many different kinds of maternal mental health issues, some of which are more severe than others. If untreated, this spectrum of mental illness can have a devastating impact on the
women affected and their families. Dads’ lives change significantly too, and they may also struggle to help a partner who is experiencing mental health problems. However, with the right support at the right time these women and men can, and do, get better.
• Approximately 70,000 women in England and Wales experience postnatal depression every year.
What Comic Relief is doing?
Comic Relief has been funding maternal mental health issues since 2010. Until 2016, their main funding has been to the Maternal Mental Health Alliance who created the ‘Everyone’s Business’ Campaign to achieve parity between maternal physical and mental healthcare provision during pregnancy and the year after birth, so women everywhere can access the specialist mental health support they need. They also funded a number of small projects working on maternal mental health in local areas, such as the Bluebells Care Trust.
In mid-2016, Comic Relief embarked on a new initiative to support projects across the UK to design and implement a new effective, high-quality community based service for families affected by postnatal mental illnesses. Around 10 to 15 projects will receive funding to provide a range of localised support, including counselling, peer support groups and childcare, to new mums and their families. This will complement and expand upon existing NHS services in the target areas. The aim is that by 2020, thousands more women and their families will access the specialist and community based support they need to get better.
• Since 2009, they have funded 9 projects in the UK who are delivering vital services and support networks to women, and their families, affected by maternal mental health issues, totalling £1,394,509.
