I prefer gel but not a gel manicure.. Still gel that they file down and fill and all. I had them for 10 yrs and only took them off for financial reasons.

No if u don't wanna damage your natural nails. Try a gel based one like shallac that hardens the nails without damage to the natural nail.

Really damaging. Try shellac (gel polish). It's breathable, dramatically less damage is done to the nail, hard as rock, super shiny and lasts about 3 weeks for me!
Gel polish even helped me stop my nail bitting habit!

There's a reason acrylic is cheaper than bio gel + seaweed gel and that's b/c it's more damaging than both gel and shellac...so I'd do bio or seaweed gel if i were you!

Yes if you have strong nails b/c if you take them off it by yourself it won't hurt as thin nails would. Also if you have the time for fills.

If you can't grow your own nails and are not happy with what you have, then yes, go with shellac or acrylic. Both of them will weaken your nails underneath, but it is temporary. Once your nails grow out, they will be back to what they were to begin with. I've had acrylic on my nails, (I am a nail tech), for over 20 years and I've never had a problem with them. It really depends a lot on who does them as well.

I've had them and loved them. But I found them to be very high maintenance. I agree with the others - try the shellac first, if you like the results of those and think you can handle with getting the acrylics filled in every couple weeks, then go for it. But I will say, they will make your nails very weak once you decide to remove them.

Why are you thinkin of having them done?
Nails are short?
Help natural nails to grow?
Special occasion?
There are many reasons my clients have them done but I wouldn't recommend you to have them done as a long term as they do cause stress and damage to your natural nails, acrylics are used as a temporary basis. So depending on the reason you want them done is to what I'd recommend

I am qualified in gel and acrylic
.. gel (inc shellac) are both bad for your nails. .. nothings better then natural. . for a one off try gel (personally does not last on me) saying that i have not had acrylic for 6 months and my nails are still damaged. .. remove them properly and hydrate them NEVER GO ANYWHERE WITH AN ELECTRIC FILE xx

Ooh too many germs! I wear my nails short, just past the end of my fingers since I'm a nurse. They're pretty though!

Do not apply acrylic to your nails. Try a rejuvinate nail polish, such as OPI or Duri brands. I had very weak nails that would constantly chip. Not only are they very strong now, but they do not want to stop growing! I'm always filing them. Lol. Here is a pic of my nails, with Essie nail polish.

The nail polish I've been using for over a year now is Duri's Rejuvacote clear nail polish. I apply as a base coat, and even top coat.

I'd say do it. You'll look and feel great! Yeah it is damaging to your nails but its only temporary.
