I'm totally behind what Tonita suggest. When makeup gigs aren't so plentiful you'll have the consistent stream of income from nursing. As long as there are sick people you will always have a job. As far as making it in the makeup biz you won't know till you try plus you have to remember that as an artist you will always be evolving and learning. Any seasoned artist will tell you that they are always educating themselves...it never stops. If it does you become stagnant and it will translate via your work. :) I'm not an artist but I know quite a few who are and the most important thing to have is a thick skin. You're going to come across clients who will treat you like dirt. You will have folks who have no qualms about dissing your work and saying it to your face. Its a very cut throat business and if you take all the ugliness to heart you will not last for long. Sorry for the bluntness but I've seen and heard stuff with my own eyes and ears. ;)

I second Shelley. You might see all the good thugs about being a makeup artist but there's a dark side too. I do a lot of bridal makeup and there's a lot of brides that have people talking in their ear telling them to pay less.
My advise is be strong. If someone wants to give you less money don't do their makeup. It becomes a circle you can't get out of.
For example I did a brides makeup and her 3 bridesmaids makeup and I didn't get the money until she and her bridesmaids left the hotel. Her mum paid me £30. I was so shy I just took the money and realized I spent £10 on lashes each from MAC so I was £10 less and on top of all that the cost of my time and expenses. I had to take a train to get to her. It made me feel like sh!t coz I spent a lot of money and time and all I got was £30.
But thank god that was a lesson learnt. Now I take payment before I do the makeup or I make it clear how much am going to charge. I know you feel like you can't do that on someone's wedding day but if you're willing to be short changed in the future. Lol.
