Hey there guys and gals. I'm building a quick portfolio to use for the spring to build a better portfolio (make sense?.. lol) anyhow, looking for inspiration. I have some ideas but I want to use three models to do at least 3 different looks to show versatility.
my usual method is not to mimic looks so that alone will be different for me and I'll prob still add my own spin.
can you all post pics of different looks you'd think would be helpful in a pre-portfolio (should we say) anything you find interesting and a bit different without being too over the absolute top. somewhat wearable.. I hope I'm making sense. lol. thanks dolls!!

V, aww thanks so much. that means a lot. its such a struggle to commit to this field. and I've been going back and forth career vs hobby, and I may be faced with the same question in a yr or so but I've regrouped and going to give it another shot!. :)

@ alma, Lmao have fun with makeup wasted.. post your haul pics here too when I post ideas. you know we love hauls. :)

thanks n advance v n alma for your ideas... :)

@Traci, definitely very pretty will do that one.

@Jacqueline,I'm starting from scratch. I'm focusing on prom and wedding season for now (like the next few months). I want some work to use for just a basic book and to make flyers. then I'll move fwd and do an actual portfolio.
I'm looking to maybe rent a chair I'm a salon and I know a few ppl but they just know I do makeup, havent seen my work and since I'm pretty basic most of the time ppl don't really know what I can do. also, for my friends that have really been pushing me it gives them something on paper when they refer me to ppl. I swear I have the best PR ppl. lol.. they even sell me on me!. lol.

That was probably the most spiritual makeup moment I've ever had. I had visions if myself frustrated and cursing trying to do my eye shadow, that has become common for me. I have started literally hating eye shadow and unable to recreate looks I've done before and now I know I can draw a clear line from that to my state of mind. Thank you Miss Jackie, I had been so disheartened.

@Jacqueline, I totally follow.
I guess I should have said I've struggled in the past. right now I feel completely motivated to move fwd.
I guess I feel at a disadvantage because I don't mimic looks. and I have been feeling like it may be a good exercise for me, so to speak, to try my hand at that. so what you're telling me is that what I've been looking at as a disadvantage is actually an advantage or the way I should be doing things.
I just want to be more organized this time.
I've only had one unhappy client (a pregnant bride who started crying during the reception cause she said her lips looked too red and she didn't want that when they weren't and she later came back and apologized and thanked me for making her beautiful..lol) but for myself I feel like I just go and freehand everything. I have no direction at all in my mind until I sit down and pull out my stuff and look at the blank canvas and I feel like I need to give myself more direction.
so I was going to work on that with this little book of 3 girls with 3 faces. maybe have a pic or face chart I've made from a pic or having a particular idea in mind.
I've always had a happiness in what I've done. (and when I don't feel it, I stop, hence I've been on a break)
I've heard Chicago is a big print market, I was scouted in college for modeling on that premise but I have never really seen much of that. reality shows were just starting out and all the job posting would be for those auditions. the bachelor etc.etc.. omg. I finally just stopped looking into it. (that as a model). as a MUA do you have suggestions on where to start looking for that kind of work? I've actually been planning focus on broadcasting and film. but I'm still researching how that works. I know that we are trying to attract more movies here and I would like to be able to jump right into that market. so as far as print goes do you join a agency? just get a website and go to events and network? I don't know. I'll look into that more.

my plan so far was to just pull something together for prom and wedding season..
after that I'm going to start flexing my MM account and really start to reach out to photog's, other MUA's, models. etc. just basically get out there and start meeting people and collab'ing with them. some freebies given the right opportunity.

@ tara, sometimes we expect too much from eyeshadow looks.
focus on something else for a bit. and let enhancing those feature (cheek, highlighting, finding the perfect foundation glow etc) allow that to guide you into the perfect eye look. if you skip the eye look until last or even for that day. through the day when you look in the mirror you may start to open up to other eye looks. like, it will start to hit you where to place certain shades. but anything with art, you definitely have to have a free heart. I've had a rough last few years and it has definitely stifled my creativity. I'm finally starting to feel more open, not that the problems have gone away, just that I am done giving them energy. you have to be mentally free and well rested to be an artist and that's the truth.

@ Jacqueline, I feel really good as far as what I want to do.
when I first started I was TOO open.
am I going to move to cali? NY? DC? work btwn here and atl. I mean. so many options. but now I don't have that many options and although relocating can happen I feel really settled here that I can do what I need to do and I';m equipped with enough information to have a good start. that definitely doesn't mean that I know it all by any means, just that I'm happy with the things I've learned and observed over the years. those things have added to my confidence I guess..

What happens when a client brings you a pic of what they want that always happens to me and I try n give it to them I mean I do it my own way but I'm still going by a picture what do you do in that case?

Feb 16, 2014

Traci L.

Move to Ny Naomi so we can chop it up lol.

Feb 16, 2014

Naomi S.

I never have that happen..
my clients never know what they want. and if they do it usually isn't the right look for them and we end up trying my idea and they like it better. lol...

traci, if I didn't have the kid I would so be in NY. no lie. its only a 2hr flight. lol.
I had a friend at ralph lauren corporate who was always going to cool events. jelly.lol.

Naomi S.

Usually my clients tell me what they don't like.
but I usually end up incorporating that and making it work for them. I guess I'm the opposite. lol.

for instance, I used to hear a lot, "I went to mac and they did this, this and this" and liked it until I got home so I don't know what I want"..
or they know the basics like, my dress is this color so I'll suggest what I think compliments that and we go from there. I have really just had convo's with clients, get a sense of who they are and kind of piggy back off of that. ends up working out.
I don't think that it is that I can't copy, I just never have to and when I set out to copy something on myself I always end up making it my own. lol..

But it is just a 2hr flight to nyc traci, we can definitely do some day parties and make it happen!.. ;-)

@ Jacqueline, I hear ya. it doesn't sound like a agency is for me. that's kind of how I thought they work and I don't like being limited to only what they provide for you and just like temp agencies they prob have no shame in taking majority of the pay. although it has taken time for me to get used to collecting money. I think I'm more confident with it now. but you shouldn't have to chase people. I also think it is better for me to locate myself in a salon vs only going on location.
I will take down all of these sites and do more research. I ran across the powder group on one of my internet searches and I get their newsletters.. they were a really cool site.. thanks so much for this info.. anything else you can think of please feel free.

great advice Jacqueline

Feb 16, 2014

Naomi S.

No, there's nothing wrong with recreations. its just not something I do so I feel like I should try it..

Feb 16, 2014

Naomi S.

Lol, I know that's right velen.!
at the end of the day you have to be able to sell yourself. agencies can work for some ppl. I don't think that we are those ppl. unless, like you say, we just get that unbelievable contract. ;-)
