I'm a little confused Andrew. In your initial post you talked about people doing something because they love it and not to be worried about how many people subscribe or follow. But then, you talked about working hard with little to no recognition and how it's unfair that only the more popular blogs/channels have a voice.
What stance are you taking exactly?
Do you want to see a change in beauty community at large? Or how the community recognizes you?

I find it odd that when I search for a topic, be it here or on youtube, I get posts from years ago instead of the most recent. I think it's because that person has the most subscribers instead of the most relevant info to my search.

When I first joined Beautylish it deffinitly was not this way at all. This site is an amazing beauty info site. I have been drawn away from youtube lately because of all the gurus now trying to do OOTD and making vids of their personal life. It just doesn't catch any interest of mine to continue watching them. My vids are no big thing cause all I do is pic vids. But there are people out there that appreciate it and I am glad I can give the info that I can give. Sometime people don't want to watch a vid that is just blah blah blah and a 1 min review.

This is a really great post. I've just recently joined Beautylish so I have no idea how it was prior to my arrival. I figured pimping out your blog/yt excessively was the norm. HA!!
I've promoted my blog, but I try to keep it in the threads that specifically ask for blog links or in the Introduce yourself posts. I put my blog out there, but I never expect anyone to follow. If you do...Great! If not...that's okay too!
I can understand everyone's frustrations. It seems like nowawadays, YT has turned into one big infommercial. When I first started watching vids back in Jan. 2008, things were so much better. The gurus that I watched actually did tutorials and helped others with their questions, needs, etc. They still do the same things to a certain degree, but the vibe is just different now. *Shrugs*

I don't have a problem asking about something, if I don't understand.. whether other people do are not. ;] Often I seem to have a different opinion, and I'm not voicing it to be mean or argumentative - but rather to bring you another perspective to consider (even if you don't agree with it).
The thread isn't 'bad' and neither is discussing it, I just wanted some clarification because there seemed to be a bit of contradiction. I agree with you on a lot of points about how some people act; whether they're big names or people getting into it for the wrong reasons.. but then it switched from being about the community to you. Changing the community at large is a pretty daunting task, but changing how your own sphere is influenced is much more attainable.
When so many people are doing the same thing, I feel it's a bit naive to expect massive popularity. Even a year and a half in, it is a difficult arena to stand out in. Remember, the beauty community is super saturated in terms of blogs and YT channels. Look at Beautylish as an example; so many people have one or the other, if not both!
A few years ago it was a lot easier to find a niche because not so many people were doing it. Opportunity and timing always key.
As far as the big name goes, if you don't like how they do things.. don't pay them any mind. How people deal with a surge in popularity is as varied as the people who write blogs and create videos.

This is all true. I made a beauty channel so I could help people that do not know how to apply makeup. Or people that want to know about a beauty product that I have already tried. I also do several other types of videos like hauls and outfit of the days...but I enjoy doing them and showing who I am. Sure the perks are cool, but I am in it to help others and express my true love for makeup. I may not a professional...but I am self taught. The learning will never stop I will continue to watch video after video. I agree that there should be a seperate thread for blog promoters. It is kind of annoying seeing post after post about it. I have just started a youtube channel recently and I am gaining more followers. I myself have very little subscribers but I would rather have a little bit that watch all my videos, comment, and rate...then a whole bunch that dont even look at my channel. I do promote my blog sometimes, but I really want to get my name out there to help people. I truely enjoy filming and showing everyone my personality. I learned a lot from youtube and hope that people will learn from me too.
