@ Andrea - Thanks for clarifying. If this was a discussion about the immorality of beauty trends & animal testing, then I'd definitely agree with all you guys about how it is wrong to kill an animal just for their fur or feathers & how wrong it is to test on animals. But, I just felt this was maybe the wrong sort of setting for it or maybe the wording of people's comments are wrong? I don't know, I just felt sort of victimized by all these comments about it.
@ Erica & - Nykki is right, I did feel like I was being judged. But I guess if you're sorry I accept your apology. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinions but I specifically asked if I should put them in myself or if I should get them done. Not if you thought it was immoral or anything. If it was, I would totally agree with you. Thats the thing with the world huh? You get judged when people don't even know you.

Okay I am going to get straight to point here, because everyone thinks I am talking straight to them. Andrea, Erica, I UNDERSTAND why you have said what you have said. The person who should have left her "opinion" out is Yasmin. Okay, I said it. I didn't want to say names, but I don't see an alternative now.
"So if you're against animal cruelty then don't wear feathers."
Is that an opinion? If it is, maybe I need to go back to school. That is a statement. It is NOT an opinion. In another post she goes on to say "like I said, I raised chickens" therefore she knows best.
The first statement, in itself, is what triggered me to get upset. I am so against animal cruelty, I LOVE animals. So when someone says that, I am SO SORRY but it kind of ticks me off.
Erica, I dont' think anything you said was wrong.
Andrea, I don't think anything you said was wrong.
You two saw something that SOMEBODY else brought up and gave your opinion. I do think it was your opinion. Neither of you made me feel judged.
I just wanted to clear things up. I feel this is the best way that I could.

Angelique, all I can say is I am sorry, that people made you feel that way! I have a tendancy to stick up for what I think is right, so maybe I took this a little overboard.

Hey I was also looking for alternatives for you Angelique and I was going to mention Etsy.com.

Faux feathers are so much better, in the long run, than natural.
@ Nykki B. - actually having raised chickens let me state that there are different breeds and just because they're all chicken doesn't mean you can eat all of them. And most feathers come from the roosters not the hens since the roosters are the ones who typically have the colorful tails not the hens.
Chicken that the vast majority of people eat are bred from Cornish Crosses which are bred for their meat. These birds - if not killed within a certain amount of time - become so large that they can actually break their own legs under their own weight. Typically they are killed before they are six months.
Eggs typically come from either Rhode Island Reds (brown eggs) or the Leghorn (white eggs). Those are the standard chickens you'll find in commercial egg plants. Those chickens have very little meat on them and are bred for their eggs not their meat so if you end up eating on you'll find little meat on their bones or that they're flesh is tougher.
The breeds that are commonly used in feather extensions are chickens that produce long feathers and those are typically egg layers OR show birds. I noticed on Whiting (the feather producer that the company mentioned earlier uses) uses Barred Plymouth Rock bantams. The Plymouth Rock are a dual chicken which can be used as egg layers (but not commercially since they're not prolific layers) or can be butchered to be eaten. Other than that I don't know what other birds he uses.
Unfortunately, too many companies use chickens - specifically the roosters over the hens - for their feathers versus using them to eat. No idea what those companies do with the bodies - which they could in turn sell to companies that make animal food.
Oh man, this thread really is making me miss my beautiful chickens. My favorite was my Bantam La Fleche rooster. Oh man was his a little sh... He was MEAN. Gorgeous with his black feathers so black that they were green. He was my award winning bird. He was also TINY but he ruled the roost over my other roosters. lol
At any rate, for those still interested in feathers, some of the ladies above found faux feathers which is far better than natural.
