I have never ever made a new year resolution. This year I did. I plan to improve my portfolio with as many clean beauty images, editorial tear sheets from print publications and to get signed with an agency. What are your goals?

Vio M.
Beautiful work Maria :-) and great resolutions = plans!
I'm planning to add more national magazines tear sheets to my portfolio and add a few more celebrities to my client list! ( the year started good so far, just wrapped a PEOPLE mag. shoot today :))

My goal is really just to break through as a MUA... I'm mostly self taught but I just graduated from high school and beauty school, so life's been a bit rough these past few months. I do some freelance work now but I would love to get a counter job to set me further in the right direction. It's my dream to make this a living.

I begin a Diploma of Specialist Makeup Services at the end of this month. I hope to build an impressive portfolio (as i am still only a novice with ALOT to learn). I would like to get my freelance business off the ground after the course and book some makeups for the Brisbane Zombie Walk & Halloween this year :) as i love Special Effects. Try and make it to IMATS in Sydney :P
All depends really, who knows what will happen with my career after this course. This has been my dream for 3 years and it has finally come true. I can't believe it :D

@Vio M Thanks for your kind words and compliment. Congratulations on your accomplishments thus far and I know that you will definitely reach your goals for this upcoming year. 80)

@Jeanine H-a counter job is a good way to gain product knowledge and familiarize yourself with clients of different skin types, textures, ethnic backrounds, age groups and concerns. I would try and start working at a counter that also focuses on skin care. Good makeup starts with good skin care/prep. I wish you the best and keep us updated on the job hunt. xoxo

@Bec W- I really respect SFX artists, that type of artistry is a total different level of amazing makeup! 80) Congrats on making your dreams come true and I wish you the best in heading over to Sydney for IMATS! Make sure you stock up to the fullest because those tradeshows always have slashed prices on makeup.

My goals are to update my portfolio, take more seminars/workshops offered by pro makeup brands and to get more business.

@Maria O - Thanks so much. My love of SFX falls into the 'graphic' side of things. The more disturbing the better. Loving the art has kind of ruined the thrill of watching horror movies now as i have some knowledge of how the effects are created and no longer grossed out. Although i don't do the whole fingernails being peeled/ pulled off, that just freaks me right!
To some day have my work totally disturb people would be a really awesome. But thats many years from now. lol.
Jan 17, 2012
Maria O.
@BEC do you watch the SFX makeup show called FACEoff? It's always amazing to see how artists in that realm of makeup work and create molds, prosthetics, etc. All the detailed work that goes into one simple SFX look and especially so in the more difficult projects demands respect from all artists. 80)

Rebeckah W.
@Maria O - OMG yes i do! Season 1 just finished up last year on tv. can't wait til they air season 2 here. The artists are amazing. The level of sfx they're at are like out of this world! lol. I freak out when i see some of the stuff they have to do. Though i LOVED the zombie episode of s1. I would love to have a go at creating a mold and designing a monster. The whole show is a total eye opener for spx.

Maria O.
Yeah, I absolutely love it. I think it has paved the way for others not in the MUA industry to know all that is involved in SFX makeup and respect it as an art.

My main goal for this year is also to really perfect my portfolio and get agency representation (so any agency mua's, id really love any advice you have!!) also to continue to build and extend my commercial, editorial and also bridal business.

My goal is to expand my portfolio, actually take classes (I'm self taught right now), and eventually acquire representation when I move to NYC this summer. And I also want to expand my kit and get a rolling traincase!!! lol
Jan 20, 2012
Maria O.
@Carmella great goals! I would like to do everything you mentioned as well! Looking forward to seeing some of your new work. xoxo

@Claire-me too. I really want to seek agency representation. I am dying to get signed but my prot needs a lot of improvement. I plan to work on my book and then get signed. As of now, a smaller agency represents me but just for at home client work and events, not like shoots or campaigns. Just got with them a week ago.

@MEgan- congrats on deciding to move out here to NYC. I am from Cali and moved out here to pursue my dreams of being an established MUA. Hope to meet/work with you when you move up here.

Megan O.
@Maria Thanks I'm really excited. I've wanted to move there since I was in high school. I'll definitely stay in touch, I want to meet as many people as possible (love your avi btw!)

I'll agree with Kate, I want to add as much as I can to my portfolio and to expand my client base. I just got my Esthetician's license in August of last year so I am trying to incorporate skincare into my makeup applications as well.
Jan 21, 2012
Maria O.
@MEgan Yay I look forward to meeting you when you move and possibly working with you. Thanks for the compliment regarding my avi. 80) I was inspired by the runway shows of 2009 with the sans brow look and Rodarte dark lips. Also took inspiration from Givenchy ads of that year as well.
@Kate-same here. I need to improve my port. It is always a continuous thing for almost all MUAs. It also allows for creative expression because most paid work is just about the same look all the time. 80)
@Mindy-Congrats! I am very happy for you. I am very huge on skin care and always find myself spending most of my time prepping the skin prior to any makeup application. Doing so allows for my models, clients to have supple skin and I never or very rarely have to touch up the skin even during full day shoots.

@Maria O. and Vio M., I'm a makeup artist in Calif. working mostly in bridal, and I'm really wanting to get into editorial and working for magazine shoots, do you have any advice on how to get these jobs??? I have no idea where to start! Thanks so much for any advice! xoxo

90% of my portfolio is makeup I have done on myself (because I also model here and there for fun). I was kind of fed up with that and really wanted my port to showcase more of the work I've done so I went out and charged a whole bunch of money on a nice professional camera. So my goal is to make sure I bring my camera along to every job and take some good shots to add to my port. It's hard to get great images when freelancing, especially if the makeup is just for a random event and not a wedding or professional photoshoot. So I'm taking matters into my own hands, lol. Also my main focus this year is to grow my YouTube page. I've gotten such a positive response from my videos on facebook (where i have over 4000 friends) but yet I only have about 800 subbies on YT so I'm working on that. Now with the new camera my video quality is so much better. Finally I swear I will make my darn blog this year that I have been putting off forever!!!! No, I will make it in the next few weeks!!! lol..
Good luck to everyone sticking to their goals!!!

My goal is to actually get more out there with being a MUA. Baby steps. I also want to learn how to blog, i know i have a lot to offer but because I have no blog, i feel a little left out of the loop and that I could have more potential clients if i had a blog lol
Jan 24, 2012
Maria O.
@Renee I started to do more editorial work and magazine work when I created a Model Mayhem account. It is a networking site for professionals. Not everyone on there are professional models or the best photographers but i have been blessed to get many paid jobs through there and have met many photographers that are now some of my closest friends. I started working with photographers on there as a collaboration shoots and got images for my portfolio. Within time your images get better and you can start reaching out to better photogs or they solicit you and you can even reply to the castings on there. its free! 80)

@Barbie congrats on your goals for this year. Look forward to seeing your new work. Are we friends on FB yet? I also blog. 80)
