I have had this problem since I started wearing makeup. I exfoliate lightly, I use every moisturizing product that exists, I've tried every foundation under the sun (currently use mufe hd stick) and I cannot get rid of this flaky texture on my skin!! It's almost like a layer covering my skin?? I use a light amount of rcma colorless finishing powder so I'm not sure where this powdery, flaky texture is coming from. Please help :( I want even, smooth looking skin for once.

Bear in mind this is ALL over my face and it's much worse in person...

First to cleanse and remove makeup, middle two I alternate between when I do exfoliate, and the olive oil masque after. I then use cetaphil lotion to moisturize.

What is your skin like after the skincare but before the makeup?

Aug 24, 2016

Abby S.

Semi dry before moisturizer, pretty normal after moisturizer and primer before foundation.

The masque helps tremendously with dryness after cleansing. Bit it doesn't stay.

And there are no flaky bits whatsoever after the moisturizer and primer? sorry for all the questions!

Your skin sounds similar to mine is. If you don't have any flaky skin after primer then I would actually recommend using your fingers and warming and spreading/working the foundation into your skin. I switched to that method and I feel like my foundation sits much better, by the end of the day I don't see any of it peeling off around my cheek (which is what it usually does). Oh and be sure to work in small light layers, don't just smear a ton on and try to work from there. This probably sounds obvious but this method really works for me so maybe you could try it out? Another thing would be to check your primer and foundation combo. I'm not an expert in this (I'd directly ask one of the moderators here) but I heard that if you mix and oil base primer with a non-oil base foundation (or vice versa) this could cause separation. Hope this helps!

Correct! No flakiness til foundation is set with powder and sometimes before too!! That's a good idea. I use the smash box hydrating primer with mufe hd foundation stick.. I believe it's a silicone primer but I need to check to mKe sure the combo is good for each other. I've never tried my fingers... That might actually help!!

If you have dry skin like me I have super dry skin and I had to learn that the best primer is moisturized skin I no longer use a primer only a heavy duty moisturizer Clinique moisture surge with that alone I'm able to even use matte foundations sucks as Estee lauder double wear try just moisturizer and let that sit for 20 to 30 min before applying foundation it might work for you I know for me it did a lot!

Along with the tips above, I found that a skin peel really helps when I get like that! I always have that around my nose and I found that the 3 minute luminous peel from Real Chemistry helped a ton.

Are you sure your moisturizer/primer/foundation don't create this mess? It happened to me when using the wrong combination that they would ball up.

I have really dry skin that's under control at the minute, but that doesn't mean I don't stay on top of it. Just reiterating proper skincare for your skintype, sheet masks, regular exfoliation and oil or cream cleansers. Also, after I let my moisterizing spf absorb, I apply Smashbox Oil Primer, let that sit for a couple minutes, then apply a thin layer of foundation. You can spot apply a little more after the 1st layer sets a tiny bit. Then when foundation application and concealing is done, wait till the final layer sets (it should not be wet or tacky). Then use a fluffy paddle brush to gently tap or press on powder not too hard though). Do not buff or swirl around the brush. You'll only move the foundation. Then use a clean fluffy brush to gently dust off any excess powder. I try to use powders that are targeted to dry skin and for me, I like compact powder to set my foundation. I find that less product gets on the brush, thus less on your face. I like Mac Careblend and Nars Crystal Translucent Compact powder.

Abby, I am a tad bit confused here...
You are having textural issues with make up, and you describe your skin as being normal to dry.. But in the photos provided all your products are targeted for oily skin - except for the mask.

Are you interested in re-evaluating your skincare to suit your skin's current needs, or are you looking for more cosmetics to try?

You should seriously consider investing in a chemical exfoliating product. It will significantly help with textural issues within a few weeks. Paula's Choice is the best brand on the market for price point and variety of formulas that are actually at the correct PH to function.

Getting your skin under control with a proper routine will make your makeup application loads easier.

That sometimes happens to me in the winter when my skin gets really dry. I suggest using a makeup sponge or beauty blender and putting it into warm/sort of hot water until a little more than damp and then squeeze it out enough it is warm. Then blend the foundation in and use your fingers to blend in a little more. If you feel as though your skin is even more dry warm up the foundation on the back of your hand and dab it in before blending with a sponge. It helps me so much!

The flaking sounds like a form of psorisis. It is a common skin condition that appears with flakes and an almost silver coloration to it. I would highly suggest you either see your doctor or contact a dermatologist. Even if it isn't psoriasis, they could target the problem much more efficiently than we can. It just seems to me that if it was normal dry skin flakes, that I would be tamed with all the moisturizing products you use. If I were to suggest something to you though- try aquafor. It is a dry skin healing ointment and it works really well on dry patches. Just apply it to the peeling.
Also if I were you- keep in mind the fact that it could be a reaction to makeup. Maybe try a trial and error and switch out products for a while to see if your skin gets better? I'm so sorry it sounds so frustrating, girl! Hope this helps!:)

Try the brand Paula's Choice they have certain products for different skin textures, I use the skin recovery enriched calming toner for normal to very dry skin, they have a whole product line for the skin recovery products. It's amazing I swear by toner.
