So I'm looking for a makeup brush set that has brushes for both eyes and face. My price range is $100-300 and I prefer synthetic brushes. Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Sarah

Not all the brushes in Rae Morris' Personal set are synthetic. Only the liner, bent liner, lip, concealer and brow brushes are synthetic. 5 out of 10 brushes are synthetic, the remaining 5 brushes are made from Blue Squirrel and Goat.

My favorite synthetic brushes are Royal &Langnickel's Revolution brushes. If you want all synthetic, these brushes are the way to go. These brushes are made with Nartrafil. It is a polyester filament that has a textured surface that very closely mimics the pick up and deposit of natural bristle bristle. Construction wise, these cannot be topped: Titanium plated brass ferrule, molded acrylic handles that have sort of a rubber coating to them. I couldn't even begin to imagine what one would have to do to obliterate these brushes. They are very reasonably priced, and if you want the benefits of both synthetic and natural bristle, there is no other sets to consider. Just my opinion. Here's a link to the Revolution brush site if you are interested.

Hello ladies! So I have a question you might be able to answer Jacqueline! Are all the brushes within their website of the same quality? Or are there several lines with different characteristics/qualities?

Hi Mar: The lines being sold under the Royal and Langnickel 'umbrella' are all a bit different. There are the Revolution brushes, The Silk Pro's, The Master Pro's, The Essential, and Moda. A majority of the differences between the lines reside in the construction and the materials used.

Moda: These are relatively new, and they remind me of Real Techniques brushes; however, the Moda brushes are much more durable. They are synthetic brushes with anodized aluminum ferrules that come in array of different colors.

The Silk Pro Series: In my opinion, this line is really what put Royal and Langnickel on the map. This series has been around for a long long time. Chrome plated brass ferrules made with natural and synthetic materials. In terms of shapes, this line is the most diverse, and one can choose and/or mix and match synthetic brushes and natural bristle brushes. A good number of the synthetic brushes in this line are blends on Nylon and Taklon.

Silk Greenline: Chrome plated nickel ferules, The original Silk Pro's are Chrome plated brass. The handles in this line are made from bamboo and have a different shape to them. The synthetic materials used in this line are the same as Silk Pro. This series is super limited in terms of shapes...There are only 12 brushes made in this series. Very universal shapes, and if someone is looking for a basic brush set and wants to stay 'green,' this is a good line. Personally, BDellium's Bamboo series brushes are far more diverse in terms of shapes, but the Royal & Langnickel Silk Greenline brushes are much more sturdy in terms of construction and materials.

Master Pro: Nickel plated brass ferrules, synthetic and natural bristle brushes with a bit more variety in terms of natural brush bristle material: Goat, sable, badger. Very nice brushes sold in varying sets.

Revolution: If you want a synthetic brushes that are as close to natural bristle brushes in terms of form and function, this line is where it is at. I own a majority of them, and am quite fond of them. They are made with a polyester filament called Natrafil. s you know, natural bristle has a microscopic surface texture called the cuticle, which if you look close enough resemble fish scales. These scales grab and hold onto powder media and then release it when brushed or pushed against another surface. The Natrafill filament that has a similarly textured surface that mimics those scales. The problem with Taklon, Nylon and some polyester filaments before Natrafil was that there was no textured surface to grab and hold powder products, so one had to spend more time building up product to get the kind of results that one would get with a natural bristle brush in much less time.

Would I say that Natrafil is better? No. Do I think it rivals natural bristle? Yes. There will always be a heated debate over natural versus synthetic, and I think in the brush world, there is room for both. There are some things that synthetic brushes are better for, and there are somethings that natural bristle is better for, and I do not believe that Natrafil can cover every type of application; hence eliminating natural bristle brushes.

I have attached a pic for you. The brush on the left is a Revolution Natrafil, the brush on the right is Kevyn Aucoins's Base shadow brush. You can see that the shape is similar and that the Revolution brush (Natrafil) material has the needed texture to grab powder. Is the pick up and deposit the same? No, but it's pretty darn close.

The Brush Essentials Collection: Good starter brushes. Mostly sold in sets. Very reminiscent of an old Crown series 623 set I had. Decent brushes, but blunt-cut. Not something that you would appreciate. ;)
