So I've recently gotten certified for facial and body waxing and my work will be offering facial waxing. It's a professional salon and more than "five dollar ten second brow wax" from Asian salons hahaha so I wanna go above and beyond and maybe you'd like to share some tricks of the trade that you found worked for you? Or, if you don't do waxing but have gotten it done what are some things that people have done that impressed you? Hopefully I'll get a reply on this I haven't gotten a reply on like my last four threads 😒

I have never been waxed before but one thing that I think is key when going to a salon or store or literally anywhere is good manners and to be polite. It's simple but the amount of people who don't do it is shocking! So my tip would be to treat the customer well and to be polite and mannerly - I am sure you already are though :)

I find that I'm naturally really shy which can come across as rude so that's actually a good tip I'll try and be more conscious of it thank you 😊

I find if you have sensitive skin maybe instead or with your favorite lotion or cream use aloe to help with redness and irritation. Also if you are going to an important event don't get waxed the day before, just incase something goes wrong. Hope I could help😊

Oh sorry I thought you were getting waxed! I defiantly agree with Hollie M.

I actually do have an aloe Vera soothing lotion that I apply on my clients after! But thank you 😊

Ah my stuff didn't post :( I'm at work now so I'll go into further detail later but..
Do a consultation! I've been to places that just sit me down & start waxing me. If you are shy and have trouble with that maybe write a list of things to go over in the consultation and look over it before each appointment until you get more comfortable.
*I keep notes of what works for each client on all my services. what they like, skin conditions, their hobbies, things to discuss with them. people like when you remember what you discussed last time.
* for new clients, I start off taking off less than planned and show them the progress. always keep the line of communication open.
*be honest! I had a lady the other day who said she's not picky and to do whatever and I explained I wasn't going to do much to the tail of her brow because it was shorter & she was so happy with me she said she's been getting her brows waxed for 20 years at a few different places and she said no one has mentioned it and probably just waxed them like that. I explained my plan and how it's best to clean them up for now instead of shaping them until they grew a little more.
* be confident. if you're nervous, your client will feel nervous.
*offer little relaxation perks. I have different essential oils in the room for clients, (keep note of which ones they like) of I'm doing brow wax I offer to apply under eye pads which are relaxing and help to depuff and my clients love that what sometimes can be such a quick non relaxing service turns into a mini spa experience with me

My teacher always raves about how her girl will show her the best way to highlight and fill in her brows, so maybe try that if you're allowed!!

I am the exact same Brittany, really shy but in certain situations try and just ignore it and don't let people know you're shy. They don't know what you're like so you can essentially "be something you're not" for a bit!

I only go once a year or so for waxing and do the rest myself, so I don't really have a proper person I go to. But The only advice I have is to ask before putting cream on. I have super sensitive skin, which I always inform them upfront, and I'm really reactive to shea butter. A lot of places use creams that have shea butter in them, and it's always the worst when they just put the cream on. I have to run home and scrub my already irritated face with a cleanser or I get hives for days.
Also, the salon I go to now plays music. It's odd, but I noticed it was much more relaxing than total silence. And when people say "I have thick browse naturally so please don't take to much off, just clean up the shape" really listen and don't make them super thin lol.
Oh and don't insinuate someone has a mustache. It's always the most uncomfortable thing when they finish the eyebrows and are like "should I do your mustache too?" I get that it gets people to pay more because it's extra service but it's just super insulting lol. So instead, before they lay down ask if it'll be both or just the eyebrows. Oh and don't call it the mustache, call it the lip. It's the little things lol.

I guess that was a larger list than I thought lol. I just kept thinking of new things but hope it helps

@Sarah thanks so much! I do consultation forms and always sit them down first because I definitely don't want to lift their skin because of medication when it's avoidable through some simple questions 😩 I love the relaxation ideas so thank you so much! @sadie yes I am a makeup artist and would love to take the time to talk to clients about that that's such a good idea thank you, I also do tinting so I like to incorporate that @hollie fair enough! I just have bad anxiety but it's definitely something worth working on :) I do feel it's gotten better since I joined the industry though! @Alyx I agree! We have a few different lotions and a hypoallergenic one which I always always ask about their skin, my sister has extremely sensitive skin and just from seeing her reactions I'd never wanna cause that to someone! Our salon plays makeup too I definitely love it more than silence or forced conversation :) YES! I always call it upper lip and normally won't be upfront to mention it, my mom got told "you have a mustache want a wax?" By a lady who did her eyebrows and she was so offended, I can't imagine how awkward that'd be lol!

I always go without the lotions, and put on some at home that I know I won't react to. But some people just go "almost done" and put lotion on and hand me the mirror without asking, even if I have said not to. I have super sensitive skin, like getting waxed on Monday I'll still be red on Friday. It's a horrid combination, thick fast growing facial hair and sensitive skin lol. Yeah I used to go to cheap little nails salons in malls and they'd always be like "your mustache too?" OH and I'm sure this is common sense but leave the kids at home. The place I went to at first (I have SUPER thick eyebrows and have been getting them waxed since like 5th grade) the lady always had her kids just running around. And of course kids are aholes and comment on the mustaches lol. Though I think that lady had her kids trained to insinuate the customer had a mustache because there would be people in the chairs getting pedicures and the kids would be like "Haha that lady has a mustache" common sense that 99% of places would fire you for, but yknow just in case lol.

Sabrina no, I do not! Alyx oh god I know! I find that a lot of Chinese nail places are like that, not to feed the stereotype!

I used to get my eyebrows waxed and I was generally pleased with them (she was friendly and did a good job, but other than that nothing special), but then my salon hired a new waxer and when she came in she didn't even ask me how I liked them, she just did them. And she had that "I know what I'm doing" kind of snotty air about her and I felt like she might have yelled at me if I told her that I didn't like how she'd done them (which I really didn't). Long story short, that's why I do my own brows now. So I guess my advice is to make sure you really understand what your customer wants and to make sure they feel like they're in an environment where they can feel like they can tell you if you're doing something that's not their preference. :) hope this helps!

I agree with Jamie it's important to listen to them and really take it in but also don't be afraid to give your expert advice. And definitely mention your other services you offer to them and I keep that in my notes as well (I have a little notebook, I like it better than in the system because when people call my personal number I have it with me and don't have to pull up the app) if someone says they don't want their brows tinted or they don't this time but may next time just remember that stuff. you want to sell yourself but also you don't want to ask so much that they feel pressured. I feel it all comes down to going above and beyond. if a client drinks a certain herbal tea and I see she's coming in the next day and we are out of it I'll go to the store and pick it up myself. the client probably doesn't even know I do it but it keeps them happy & that's the most important.

And I'm curious Brittany what waxes and product line do you use?
Apr 13, 2015
Brittany F.
Thank you Jamie! I definitely agree with you it's so important to listen to your customers! And Sarah, we have a tasimo with a bunch of coffees and teas but I'll keep in kind what people drink that's so kind 😊 we work with Satin smooth, I personally love their Aloe Vera wax for facial waxing it is so smooth and easy to work with, as well as less irritating from what I've seen with the people I've done so far (especially my sister) I use the Gigi line for my cleanser powder and all my after care and I do quite like it so far.

Ok awesome. I'm able to pick what products we use and am planning on trying out new things this time. I used to use gigi aftercare products on myself a long time ago but never had issues.

I once went to a salon to get my mani and pedi done. One of the women who works there asked me out loud and in front of everyone if I want to "wax my mustache" which actually don't even have! I was so offended that I never went back there ever again. So my advice would be don't point out existing or non existing flows of a customer out loud :/

I really like it when they talk to me casually about my day and plans when I'm getting my brows waxed. It might seem obvious or maybe unprofessional I'm not sure but all I know is when people don't I feel awkward

I would say just talk to people. It's an uncomfortable thing to get done and having the technician talk to me and making me feel more at ease definitely helps.
