Use layering scissors and cut just the top section of your hair.

Um...go to a different salon. Seriously.
I sometimes trim my own ends, but I have very, very long hair...but I definitely would not be able to get an even layer distribution the way that I like it without going to a salon. I like choppy vertical layers in the back because it works with my natural texture and the ways that I tend to style it. My dry cut costs $20 (and I usually tip $10 because it's so cheap) from a hole-in-the-wall salon from a lady that knows what the definition of an inch is.
Just find a better salon or a better stylist at the salon you're going to and tell them very, very exactly what you want and how you want it.

Oh, and one more thing. If you're not happy with the result TELL THEM SO. Make them fix it. You're a paying client and customer service is what keeps salons alive.

if your hair is long the easiest way to get fast and beautiful layers is to flip your head upside down and cut your hair straight across, it gives you gorgeous layers and it doesn't change the length. I used to always cut my hair this way.

For the pictures of people that cut their own layers:
Yeah, it's layered...but it's completely unblended, uneven and it doesn't fall the way a proper cut would. I'm sorry, but there's definitely a technique to hair cutting. The angle at which you hold the section, the angle at which you hold the scissor...it all makes a difference. Flipping your head over will give you hair of different lengths, but that is not the same as a nicely cut layer. Yish. Try blowdrying THAT one into a Kate Middleton.
No offense.

I speak from experience as someone who tried to cut their own bangs. DON'T CUT YOUR OWN HAIR. As most have suggested just go to a salon. If you aren't satisfied change salons or stylists and get your money back. Cutting hair takes training, its to be done by a professional. The result was horrific when I cut my own bangs and since then I don't even think of picking up the scissors.

@ Stephanie D. adding 'no offense' the end of your comment doesn't neutralize the sarcastic and condescending tone of said post, but that's okay. To your comment that it was uneven, and didn't fall correctly, my hair was wet, and if you persist that the moisture content is irrelevant, not all beautiful haircuts are completely symmetrical, are they? There is a method in the salon of gathering the hair and brushing it straight up before cutting the ends off, so odd, that they would perform this style that you so disdainfully denounced in a professional salon.. But anyway, the question wasn't should I, or shouldn't I cut my own hair. It was how can I, she has obviously made her decision to cut her own hair and doesn't need you to revisit that decision. I answered her question by providing her with a way to cut her hair at home, which is what she asked for. If she doesn't like it that's fine. Maybe she doesn't like the cookie cutter layers she has gotten at the salons. She is obviously looking for an alternative. I loved my hair cut that way. Perhaps she is not looking to model her style after the Duchess. Yish. No offense.

just go to the hairdressers, because you will layer your hair and it will go wonky ( even if it doesnt look it) and then the hairdresser will have a hard time sorting it

You need to sit with one for at least 20 minutes before they go anywhere near you hair with scissors or colour!
They should ask you about your lifestyle, the type of hair you have and also how you like to wear your hair!
Insist that your nervous and that you have had bad experiences with hairdressers before and any hairdresser worth their weight will listen and do what YOU want to do not what they think you should have!
Don't always go for the most expensive, go to a salon that isn't that busy! Go on a week day when they can spend time getting to know you!
And once you have found one! A good one! KEEP THEM!
I'm a hairdresser and I personally think a hairdresser is worth their weight in gold!!!!!!!!
