Pick up a Sonia G. makeup brush and you’ll immediately notice something different. From the sleek, perfectly weighted handle to the cashmere-like softness of the bristles, it’s clear that dedication, craftsmanship, and a lot of effort went into every single detail. Here, Sonia shares a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the process of making her dream of perfect makeup brushes a reality—and the talented artisans who helped her do it.
It was a privilege to spend time with the artisans at the brush workshop. I met them several times as a guest, but being there for “work” was exhilarating!
I was able to talk to the master artisan (pictured above) who translated my designs into reality. I also spent time with the artisan responsible for mixing the colors to achieve the perfect shade of mocha for the logo. Watching them at work was incredible.
This project was unique; it involved new shapes, new ferrules, new products, and new techniques. I wanted the artisans to know how happy I was to collaborate with them. I wanted them to understand my expectations: what I wanted the brushes to look like and how they had to perform. This was so much fun for all of us—it was much more than just business.
When we were facing technical limitations, we worked very hard so that we never had to compromise on quality. The artisans went beyond my expectations. Every choice was made for a reason, from the color of the ferrules to the gradient of the lacquer and the length and shape of the handle.
I believe our close relationship and trust were very helpful during the whole process. This adventure was intense and extremely enriching—I learned a lot about myself, too.
We all worked really hard to make this happen. Seeing the brushes ready to be shipped was very emotional—not only for me but for all of us.
