The Coolest New Eye Shadows To Wear This Fall

Paints, foils, metallics—we couldn't be more excited about the creative new eye shadows hitting shelves this fall. We've always loved the versatile Inglot AMC Eyeliner Gels, which are really painterly (you can use them not just to line eyes, but to create custom blended shadow colors, lipsticks, and more). Once you see and try out these three newbies, you’ll understand why we're thrilled to have more artistic color options in our stash.

Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow

We're obsessed with these little color pots, which marry blendable glitter specks with the consistency of a concentrated cream. The 12 shades, from the neutral “Kitten” to the smoky “Vintage Black Gold,” are rich and thick, yet easy to layer. You can use them to create an innocent wash of shimmer or a high-voltage shock of color. The product dries as a powder that has a textured, metallic foil look that's really distinctive.

There are a few warnings to heed, as we learned after a bit of trial and error: 1. Use the primer that comes in the kit for longer wear and less creasing. 2. Fingers work better than brushes to control application, so you don't end up with a Tinkerbell-like face full of glitter residue. (If you do get fallout, here's how to remove it.) 3. Start small. You don’t need a lot of product to get the full effect. 4. Make sure you have a good eye makeup remover on hand.

NARS Eye Paints

Even with just one coat, these eye paints look good dry. The gel formula is genius, effortlessly gliding over lids and leaving noticeable pigment behind. The finish has less glitter and more shimmer, which make them great to use for a day-to-night look (and less risky than the Stila Metals). We recommending using your fingers to apply this product, unless you want to use them as eyeliner: the matte shades double as great liners when applied with a small, stiff brush!

Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo Metals

If you like the idea of NARS Paints but want a more affordable option, pick up a few of these drugstore dupes from Maybelline. They have an easy-to-use cream gel consistency. Admittedly, they don't go on quite as easily, so you'll need a few coats to get a fuller look. (Another tip: We found that the six “metals” shades provide better coverage than the others.) The name "tattoo" is a reference to the long-wear, and the colors do last, if not for 24 hours, as the package claims.
