1. Figure out what kind of artist you'd like to be. SFX? Bridal? Beauty and Lifestyle? Fashion? Film or Print? Theater? Read a ton and interview established artists to help determine this.
2. Read every book you can get your hands on. The Makeup Artist's Handbook is an excellent place to start. Don't just read about makeup; read about fashion history and photography as well.
3. Start building a professional kit. Apply for as many pro discounts as possible. Don't buy things without playing with them. Expect this to take a few years. camerareadycosmetics.com has fantastic starter kits. DO NOT buy a huge train case on wheels. Buy a small rolling suitcase and lots of ziploc bags and glad ware. This is the cheapest way to start and many pros still use this system.
4. Practice on every human you can. Men, women, all skin types and colors and all ages.
5. Go to makeup school if you'd like, take classes in business and art, learn at the very least light hairstyling. Learn wigs and hair work.
6. Pester (nicely) every artist who is better than you to let you watch, assist, shadow, interview. I would never say no to an aspiring artist who offered to buy me a cup of coffee if I'd answer questions.:)
7. AFTER you've done the above, start testing. This is how you build a portfolio so you can get paid work. ONLY test with photographers who are very good and professional models (as in signed with an agency).
8. Now you can start approaching agencies and trying to get paying work.

This whole process takes, on average, 5-8 years. Most artists work another job while doing all this. Don't be discouraged by that. It's a tough business. If you live in LA or NYC you will have far more work available. The only good makeup schools are there anyway. Best of luck to you hon!

Nice post. I learn something totally new and challenging on websites I stumbleupon every day. It's always useful to read through articles from other authors and practice something from other sites.  http://jio4gvoice-app.com/
